And there will also be the incredible sight of riders raising tens-of-thousands of pounds as they auction leathers, helmets, paintings and much more. With only three weeks to go before the big day, the teams and riders have started to confirm what they will be donating to the auction. Tech 3 star, Colin Edwards, has put aside a set of his race leathers, along with a pair of his boots and gloves. As well as hosting the auction, Toby and Jules will be opening their commentary box to one of the practice sessions and official race photographer, Andrew Northcott, will be taking someone trackside to see a MotoGP race from behind the lens. It is not just MotoGP stars that are helping raise money for Riders for Health. Danny John-Jules, 'the Cat' to Red Dwarf fans, will be bringing an anniversary box set of the cult BBC series, signed by the entire cast. Danny will also be helping three-time British Superbike champion, Niall Mackenzie, and MCN editor, Marc Potter, to lead 150 bikes around Silverstone in the famous Day of Champions ride-in. New bikes set for Zambia programme Riders’ programme in Zambia, southern Africa, may be less than one year old, but it is already having a big impact on the people it is helping. Currently, Riders’ work is focused in a small area in the east of the country. We have mobilised five couriers to transport blood and sputum samples to the laboratory. This helps speed up and increase the accuracy of testing for diseases like HIV/AIDS and TB. Accurate and timely testing is crucial to get people on to the right medication, giving them the best chance of recovery. Riders is now planning to mobilise 15 health workers in the region to provide regular health care to the very remote communities there. To support the growth of this programme Yamaha Motor Europe have donated five new Super Ténéré motorcycles this month. The motorcycles were all used in the Ride for Life from Lisbon, Portugal to Marrakesh in Morocco. The Super Ténérés were ridden by a group of competition winners who were joined on the first day by Riders co-founder, Randy Mamola. In Marrakesh, Che Jallow, Riders’ deputy programme director from the Gambia was on hand to accept them on behalf of our team in Zambia. ‘The message is there is no need to die because of unreliable transport,’ said Che, ‘When I received the five keys in my hand something went through me that was hard to express, because I know how valuable these bikes will be.’ You can find out more about the ride by clicking here to read the excellent Ride for Life blog. Riders for Health would like to thank everyone at Yamaha Motor Europe for all of their help and support, these bikes will make a big difference to our work in our newest programme. Support Riders this Fathers’ Day Are you always buying your dad a bag of golf tees for Fathers’ Day? Does he have enough socks already? This year you can get more health workers on the road by buying your dad a Riders for Health gift donation. Just £10 could provide a fortnight’s worth of fuel for a health worker, enabling them to reach all the people within their care. £30 could provide a helmet for a health worker ensuring that they are safe on the road and £55 could provide a day’s training. Teaching a health worker how to ride their motorcycle safely and how to carry out the basic maintenance which means their bike will never break down. Each of these gifts will help health workers like Alphonce Monokoa reach rural communities and save lives. We spoke to Alphonce earlier this year and he told us a about family he visited in a rural community in Lesotho. The father had recently passed away because the medical care he needed could not reach him. He had five children aged between five and 17 years old and was the sole breadwinner. Alphonce was deeply affected by this as he knew that had he been mobilised he would have been able to see him sooner and might have saved his life. ‘I have seen this happen so many times before,’ he told us. ‘The medical aid needed is there, yet all across Africa, people are dying from easily preventable and treatable diseases because we cannot reach them.’ Why not buy your dad a Riders for Health gift this Fathers' Day and help ensure that families across Africa do not lose their fathers because the health care they need does not reach them? Click here to order your gifts from our online shop today, or call our office on 01604 889 570. Please place your order by the 13th June to ensure you receive your gift in time. Calling all iPhone users The people that help us develop www.riders.org have offered to design and build Riders for Health a new iPhone app as a donation. We think this is a fantastic opportunity as it not only means that the money from any downloads will support our work, but it is also a great new way of getting people involved in Riders for Health for the first time. We only have one thing to decide now: what it will do? If you have an interesting idea for an iPhone app, why not drop us an email at mhann@riders.org and let us know. Fundraising idea of the month – A MotoGP party As every racing fan knows it is the British MotoGP this month and if you aren’t going to Silverstone it is the perfect chance to get some friends together and support the official charity of MotoGP at the same time. You could invite your friends round to watch the race at a MotoGP party and ask for donations to support the work of Riders for Health. It is a great excuse for a party, and being the summer there is always half-a-chance that you will be able to turn your MotoGP party into a barbeque. What better way of helping support Riders for Health get more health workers on the road? Why not let us know how you got on by emailing Elizabeth in our fundraising team on, edunn@riders.org or sending us a message on twitter, you can find us @ridersforhealth. | Latest news links | | | | | Help us spread the word about the need for reliable transportation in Africa… If you have found this newsletter interesting, please forward it to a friend.
