 APPG AGM and seminar on the role of social enterprise in the Big Society Last week in the House of Commons, the All Party Parliamentary Group on Social Enterprise hosted a seminar on the role of social enterprise in the Big Society. Keynote speaker Rohan Silva, Special Advisor to David Cameron, highlighted the Government's desire for social enterprises to play a big role in the delivery of public services, in particular in education and health, and discussed the sector's importance within the Government's localisation agenda. Andrew Croft, CEO of CAN, and Geoff Walker, CEO of Sandwell Community Caring Trust spoke on behalf of the sector about the inspirational work their organisations do, alongside Claire Dove, Chair of the Social Enterprise Coalition which runs the APPG's secretariat. For more information, visit the Group's website: http://www.appgsocialenterprise.org.uk/pages/appg.html  Social Franchising Support Social franchising is an option for both existing social enterprises that wish to expand their businesses through replication as well as individuals who want to set up a franchise of an existing, successful social enterprise. However, it is a relatively new model of growth and little support exists for those wishing to embark on this route. Therefore, as part of the Big Lottery (BASIS) funded Investing in Social Enterprise Expansion programme, the Social Enterprise Coalition is delivering an innovative Social Franchising Support project. The aim of this project is to undertake detailed research into the processes and issues that surround social franchising and from this develop a comprehensive suite of support tools and resources for all social franchisors, franchisees and social enterprise business advisors. SEC has joined forces with a number of key partners to deliver this project and we are currently in the research stage. So if you're interested in or have experience of social franchising and would like to contribute to this work, we'd love to hear from you. One winner, Anita Richards, was matched for a mentoring session with Tokunbo Ajasa-Oluwa. She said: "The session with Tokunbo last Wednesday was an extremely positive experience and really has allowed me to take a more realistic approach in all areas of the business plan. To win has inspired me with the confidence I really needed at the time so thank you for selecting me!" Anita will be using Tokunbo's advice as she sets up a social enterprise to support young disadvantaged youth who want to break into the visual arts and fashion industries. In other news. Dr. Sam Everington recently hosted a delegation from government officials from Hong Kong to Bromley by Bow, John Bird will be making a second visit to Bottisham College to advise students on the Young Enterprise Social Enterprise scheme and Saeeda Ahmed will deliver a seminar on social enterprise to 80 young Muslims from 20 countries at the Mosaic International Leadership Summit in Cambridge next month For more on this and all the latest news from the programme, visit the Social Enterprise Ambassador website. Events  Knowledge sharing workshop on business support projects
12th July, Birmingham On the 12th July, the Social Enterprise Coalition will be running a free one-day workshop which will bring together the complete portfolio of social enterprise business support projects that are taking place across England. The event will be a chance for project managers to meet and network and to share expertise and experience. With key speakers from the sector, it will also be an opportunity to join in conversation on the current challenges facing the social enterprise business support landscape and how these can be planned for and overcome. 15th July, London The Development Trusts Association will be holding a community shares policy seminar entitled ‘Taking Ownership Local' on Thursday 15th July at the Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre, Southbank, London. The event is free to attend but places are limited so early booking is advised. It will bring together key decision-makers and policy advisors; social finance specialists; social enterprise advisors and community activists interested in setting up community share schemes. The seminar will: - Bring together the initial findings from the OTS and CLG backed action research into community shares led by the DTA, Co-operativesUK and the SROI UK Network.
- Share community activists stories of their own journeys with expert research findings covering the explosive growth in the market and the challenges encountered along the way.

Resources  Small to medium enterprises (SME) Finance Challenge The Group of 20 and Ashoka's Changemakers, with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, launched The G-20 SME Finance Challenge, an online competition to find the best models worldwide for public‐private partnerships that leverage public interventions to catalyze finance for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). At the Toronto G-20 Leaders Summit, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the competition emphasizing the importance of business in driving the economy and followed with a $20M commitment from Canada to help scale-up the competition's winning solutions. Up to 15 Challenge winners will be invited to the November 2010 G-20 Summit in Korea to be recognized for their innovative ideas. Winners will then be connected with donors and investors at an SME conference in Germany following the Korea Summit.
