Social Enterprise Coalition activity Annual photography competition to capture business at its best launched Images which show business at its best are being sought as part of a national photo competition for social enterprises. ‘Social Vision: business at its best' is looking for images that capture the unique and transformative work of social enterprise. Now in its third year, the photography competition is for the first time being jointly run by Triodos Bank and the Social Enterprise Coalition, in association with Social Enterprise magazine. Business at its best is about transforming lives through enterprising ideas and solutions; it's about social and environmental missions guiding the way to financial stability and a more just and sustainable world. Social enterprises are businesses trading for social and environmental purposes. Simply put, they use the power of business to address some of society's most pressing challenges. We're looking for images that show the passion, people and places using enterprise to drive positive change. So if you're working for a social enterprise take a photo that highlights your day to day activities and tell us the story behind the image. The winning photographer will receive a cash prize of £750. The social enterprise featured in the photograph will also win £750 along with one year's free membership to the Social Enterprise Coalition, an entry ticket for two people to Voice 11, a year's subscription to Social Enterprise magazine and £1000 worth of print advertising in Social Enterprise magazine. Regional heats will be taking place in each of the nine English regions and in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland before the finalists go head to head to win the overall prize. The UK winner will be decided by an online public vote. All of the shortlisted photos will go on display in London during November and will be used to create a new 2011 photographic calendar. The competition opens today and will close on Friday 1 October 2010 at 5pm. The regional finalists will be announced on Social Enterprise Day, Thursday 18 November. For more information including full terms and conditions visit the Social Vision webpage. Assistance for researchers We at SEC are keen to help postgraduate and other researchers with their work in the social enterprise field. Owing to the high number of requests for assistance we receive and our limited resources to respond to these individually, we will now be holding a monthly open hour when researchers can come in and meet with us to discuss their work and any aspects we can help with, as well as link with each other. Our next open hour will be on Thursday 26th August at 3pm with Head of Policy Ceri Jones and Senior Research Officer Lidija Mavra. For more information contact Lidija on lidija.mavra@socialenterprise.org.uk. The subject was ‘Social Enterprise, Procurement and the Role of Local Government' and addressed a number of questions including: - Is the Big Society a time-limited offer given the ‘cliff' in March 2011?
- What is/will be the impact of the Big Society agenda on commissioning and procurement of smaller organisations?
- Can we identify examples of good practice?
- What are the challenges for local government in policy, commissioning and procurement that make it harder for them to get the most out of social enterprises?
- What do social enterprises need to know about local government in order to engage more effectively and demonstrate their value?
The seminar was chaired by Linda Damerell, London Regional Development Manager of the DTA. Other contributors were Professor Tony Bovaird, Professor of Public Management and Policy and the Third Sector Research Centre, University of Birmingham, Reverend Tim Curtis, Senior Lecturer in Social Enterprise at the University of Northampton Business School, Dai Powell from HCT Group, David Tootill from Southbank Mosaics, and Ceri Jones, Head of Policy at the Social Enterprise Coalition. There was very positive feedback from attendees including Brian Millington, Enterprise Initiatives Officer at Enfield Council, who said: "This seminar was really inspiring and engaging, and had an excellent balance between academics, public sector and practitioners. Campaign launched to combat public sector spending cuts In a bid to combat the effects of significant public sector spending cuts and keep the third sector flourishing, iSE (Initiative for Social Entrepreneurs) with support from Be Birmingham has launched a campaign to increase the amount of inter-trading within the sector. The ‘Shop for Change' campaign aims to make it easier for social enterprises in Birmingham to buy business goods and services from each other. It involves finding out about and raising awareness of what is already on offer as well as supporting start ups to fill any gaps. Third sector organisations are also being called on to sign a pledge to put social enterprise at the top of their ‘shopping' list. Around 100 people attended the launch and their organisations signed the pledge. "We were delighted by the energy and enthusiasm in the room," says Sarah Crawley, Chief Executive of iSE. "People embraced the concept and immediately started making contacts and discussing opportunities to work together." For more information visit the i-SE website.
