How to Get the BIXI Public Bike Share in Toronto Closer to Getting on the Road Although approved in principal by City Council there are targets that must be met for the BIXI public bikes to actually make it onto Toronto streets next Spring - including a mere 1,000 annual subscriptions sold by November 2010. For $95 tax incl subscribers get a 12mth subscription with free access to public bikes throughout the core, and even further across the city as the program expands. Bill 65 Not-For-Profit Corporations Act: Public Hearings in August Bill 65 is at a critical stage with public hearings taking place this month. Bill 65 presents great opportunities for nonprofit organizations, including "allow not-for-profit corporations to engage in commercial activities where the revenues are reinvested in the corporation’s not-for-profit purposes." To have a strong showing at the Bill 65 public hearings this month, organizations are needed to make presentations at these hearings. The Ontario Nonprofit Network can assist by providing briefing notes and talking points. The Centre for Social Innovation and the Ontario Nonprofit Network (an incubated project of CSI) have been working on Bill 65 for three years. Inter-Action: Canada’s New Multiculturalism Grants and Contributions Program Now Accepting Funding Applications On June 27, 2010 changes to the Multiculturalism Program were announced by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). The new program, known as Inter-Action, provides funding under two streams, Projects and Events, each with their own updated objectives, funding guidelines, and processes. Ontario’s Social Finance Census Receiving Surveys Until August 23, 2010 The Ontario Nonprofit Network and Social Venture Exchange has launched the first Ontario-wide Social Finance Census – a survey initiative to gather vital data on non-profits, charities, social enterprises, and social purpose businesses in order to build a strong profile of the sector. The Census involves a set of surveys with basic and in-depth questions tailored specifically to issues of financing and regulation. TEDxToronto Delegate Applications Now Open TEDxToronto is the official TEDx conference for Toronto, Canada. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, the second annual conference takes place on September 30, 2010 at CBC Glenn Gould studio with 12 TEDxTalks. It brings together the city’s foremost thought leaders, change makers and everyday people from each discipline – as speakers, attendees and enthusiasts. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, there is no charge for approved delegates to attend the conference. Pro-bono Consulting is Available from the Volunteer Consulting Group The Volunteer Consulting Group (VCG) offers pro-bono consulting services for local nonprofit organizations. Teams of five undergraduate students, one MBA student and advisors from the consulting industry provide support on areas such as fundraising strategies and marketing plans. Nonprofits typically receive support for a few hours each week, for six months beginning in November. Meditation and breathing is followed by community development processes and some of the challenges in large-scale agriculture and food systems, leading to work on action-based solutions. Next there is a focus on agriculture: understanding soil, composting, soil amending, mulch, planting by seed, transplanting, perennial and annual polyculture design and garden planning as well as kitchen gardening.
