Vision in Action

Fairtrade consults the world

The Fairtrade movement has brought greater attention to producers in developing countries and how trade can become more fair. Now, for the first time, FLO is overhauling the standards framework in a year-long process to make the standards more efficient and effective for producers.

This past August, FLO brought together farmers, workers, traders and others from more than 128 organizations spanning 42 countries to gather input on the proposed changes. Workshops were held in Nairobi, Kenya; Lima, Peru; Bangkok, Thailand; and Brussels, Belgium.

Fairtrade producers discuss standards

Fairtrade brings values to the world of international exports

The global exchange of goods benefits Fairtrade certified producers: bananas from the Windward Islands find their way to your local supermarket; coffee grown in the highlands of Sumatra crosses the world to your cup.

In September, FLO CEO Rob Cameron presented at the 11th Annual World Export Development Forum in Chongqin, China. Most of the talk focused on export volume and value creation, but Cameron took the chance to add 'values' to the discussion bringing a people's perspective to the forum.

Coffee in a high market

Since the beginning of 2010, coffee prices have risen over 45% to a 13-year high and the effects are filtering throughout the market. Expanding in producer markets

Spotlight On:

Aruna Anand, NAP CEO

Aruna Anand joined the Fairtrade movement as CEO of the Network of Asian Producers (NAP) just two months ago. With 14 years of experience in the development sector, Anand is prepared to step into the leadership role as CEO of Fairtrade's youngest producer network (regional associations that represent Fairtrade certified producers and organizations). The NAP currently comprises 182 producer organizations and represents thousands of Fairtrade certified producers from Pakistan to the far reaches of Papua New Guinea.

Products and Standards

Women's groups in Africa see potential in Fairtrade

Everyday, women in remote communities of Southern Africa fan out from their villages to gather fruit from the iconic baobab and marula trees that dot the landscape. More than 2.5 million women depend on these fruits for use at home or to sell in local markets. Spurred by interest from women's groups in Swaziland and Malawi, Fairtrade recently launched standards for these products that are growing in popularity on the international market.
