Take Action! ASBC Policy Update - Toxic Substances Control Act Reform
Representatives Henry Waxman and Bobby Rush introduced the Toxic Chemical Safety Act in the House on July 23rd as a companion bill to Senator Frank Lautenberg's Safer Chemicals Act introduced in April. Both bills, H.R.5820 & S.3209, would amend TSCA, the outdated law widely, acknowledged to have failed in its goal of protecting people and the environment from toxic chemicals. The American Sustainable Business Council has played an important role in bringing a business voice into the efforts to support strong measures in the new House Bill that would be good for our businesses as well as our communities and the earth. Safer Chemical Healthy Families has provided strong NGO leadership. ASBC encourages you to contact your Representative in the House. Here is a link to a website where you can input your zip code to find their contact information: www.contactingthecongress.orgCalling Members of the House Committee:If you have a few more minutes to commit to ensure that this Bill move forward to help us get toxic chemicals out of our products and communities, please consider calling members of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and asking them to cosponsor the Bill. For more background material and talking points on "The Business Case for TSCA Reform" see ASBC's white paper here. - Welch (VT) - Andrew Savage - 202-225-4115

Writing an Op-Ed: ASBC is looking for additional business leaders who would be willing to work with us to write an Op-Ed for their local paper. This will help ensure that the issue stays in the public mind as politicians are running for office and also help make sure it stays on the agenda with the new Congress. Some sample Op-Eds we have for you to use as a guide are attached to this email. We will help you through the entire process, so feel free to call or emails ASBC with questions and also for assistance with writing it in general. And of course sign ASBC's petition if you haven't already. |
