Bangladesh: Social business facing legal hurdle in Bangladesh, 8.3 million borrower-owners still at stake
  • German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Dirk Niebel, and Andris Piebalgs, the European Union Commissioner for Development, visited Bangladesh’s Finance Minister Ama Muhith.
  • The German Minister raised the issue that German companies investing in social business in Bangladesh were facing legal hurdles.
  • After the meeting, the Finance Minister of Bangladesh said that the Bangladeshi government was considering ways to address the issue.
  • As you know, Prof. Yunus has been the target of a smear campaign, leading him to step down as a Managing Director of the Grameen Bank.
  • Both the independence of 8.3 million poor borrower-owners of Grameen Bank is at stake, as well as the independence of approximately 40 other Grameen companies. The Bangladeshi government has shown interest in taking these over.
  • If you want to support Prof. Yunus, you can do any of the following:
    • Join the Facebook groups: Support Yunus (7,100 members) and Unite for Yunus (5,627 members)
    • Post tweets on Twitter
    • Write Op-Eds for your local newspaper
    • Rally Bangladeshi expat communities in your country
    • Get in touch with influential friends to raise awareness

Social Business Day 2011 was celebrated in Dhaka and around the world

  • June 28th 2011 was not only Prof. Yunus’ birthday but also the second Worldwide Social Business Day.
  • Social business day in Dhaka: The Yunus Centre organized a fantastic social business day event with speeches, panel discussions, a booming marketplace of social businesses and lots of supporters and social business aficionados from all over the world! This year’s theme was ‘Achieving the Millennium Development Goals through Social Business’ and the event was attended by over 500 national and international social business enthusiasts
  • Hans Reitz and the YY Mumbai team were in Dhaka to celebrate Social Business Day with Prof. Yunus!
  • Huzaifa Khorakhiwala, GCL´s ambassador in India, organized a great video interaction between Prof. Yunus and about 10 universities across India. This session was attended by students from universities across Bangladesh who joined their Indian counterparts in energetically asking Prof. Yunus many questions on social business.
  • Social Business Day 2011 online: The Grameen Creative Lab team in Wiesbaden also celebrated the day and organized an online event. It included five live streams from the danone.communities in Senegal, China, France, Cambodia, and India as well as live sessions with Grameen Caldas and the GCL team in Wiesbaden. Additionally, people from all over the world including Japan, Singapore, China, France, the UK, the US, Senegal, Peru, Scotland, amongst others sent in hundreds of pictures, video messages, comments, and questions on the GCL website and Facebook group - you can see the pictures here.
  • If you missed out on any of the day’s events go to www.grameencreativelab.com/wsbd2011 where you can find the videos and recordings of live streams as well as a slideshow of the contributions.

India: YY Mumbai identifies social business opportunities for India & Bangladesh

  • Many people from India actively celebrated Social Business Day with pictures, videos and dedications pouring onto the Grameen Creative Lab website. These included Oscar-nominated film director, Shekhar Kapur, Don Bosco Institute of Management and Research in Mumbai declaring social business year at their campus, students from the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies sending in pictures, an entrepreneur from Auroville dedicating his permaculture-based social business to Prof. Yunus, a young and upcoming film maker promising to create a “YY” video to release later in the year, among many others.
  • Grameen Shakti: The YY Mumbai gang and a team of renewable energy experts from India did detailed site visits and meetings with Grameen Shakti in Bangaldesh. We are now in the process of creating a business plan for adaptation of this model into India. We welcome interested partners and investors to join us in this venture. Please contact Aarti.wig@grameencl.com to find out more.
  • YY Matrishakti: YY Matrishakti is a team of young entrepreneurs from Rajasthan, India who created a low wattage LED bulb that can be used with solar energy. They are being supported by the Yunus Social Business Fund Mumbai. This was showcased to Prof. Yunus in Dhaka and on his suggestion we are now planning to implement this in Bangladesh in some of the Grameen social businesses there!

Colombia: The Caldas OpenIDEO challenge continues into the “concepting phase”

  • Grameen Caldas: We are currently redirecting our energy towards finding corporate and organizational partners. We have established contacts with many large players in Colombia and Caldas and have great hopes to find investors for the Caldas projects.
  • Strategy design: Thanks to our teams of volunteers, we are conducting extensive research in the areas of health, nutrition, education and housing in Caldas in order to define an investment strategy.
  • OpenIDEO: The Challenge continues! The ‘Concepting’ phase was launched on Social Business Day, June 28. The members of this virtual community are now working together to design social business ideas to help improve health in low-income communities of Caldas.  Through a live stream they had the chance to interact with The Grameen Creative Lab and the Grameen Caldas team, and discuss issues around social business and the situation in Caldas in order to improve their understanding of the context of the challenge, and produce even better ideas! You are all invited to join the Challenge and help make a difference in Caldas. To go to the OpenIDEO challenge click here
