 Triple Bottom Line: From macro to micro

The triple bottom line is, in my opinion, a wonderful way of measuring the true success of a business. When I think back to my economics undergrad, investment exams, and certification material, nowhere did the phrase "Triple Bottom Line" appear. I was taught that the sole purpose of a business is profit. Most simply put, a business must make a profit in order to validate its existence and prove its success. This is and always will be the case; however, with triple bottom line accounting, profit is no longer the sole measure of a business's success. Read more...

Energy is something most Canadians completely take for granted, and don't generally notice unless it is unexpectedly not available, or if the price suddenly spikes at the meter or the pump, or if someone one day proposes to build a wind turbine or pipeline in our backyard.

 

But if we can transform how we produce and consume energy, we can solve so many problems at once.

 Hiring staff for mission or experience: 

The triple bottom line conundrum

   

I'd very much like to hear your opinion on the following. I recently read that one of our social enterprise leader's top 10 suggestions was to hire people for mission passion as the leading motivator. I believe the thinking is that while many people can do accounting, for example, not everyone can do accounting and be super psyched about helping indigenous plants (as just one example).

16th Annual Social Venture Institute (SVI) Hollyhock The format of SVI is highly interactive and experiential. Participants present their business problems to a panel of experienced business leaders and fellow participants. In return, they receive advice, tools, and resources to strengthen and grow their enterprise in a socially conscious way. September 14-18, Cortes Island, BC 

 

Social Enterprize Awards now accepting submissions Four Social EnterPrizes will be granted by the Trico Charitable Foundation on November 17th. Two organizational awards will be given to entrepreneurial nonprofit organizations who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and innovation to benefit society. And two individual awards will be given to people who hold full time positions as social entrepreneurs within the nonprofit sector, and who intend to continue providing leadership in an effort to innovate and build capacity. Application deadline is September 15, 2011.  

 

5th annual Staples Youth Social Entrepreneur Competition is a global competition created by Staples Foundation and Ashoka to recognize exceptional young people using innovation and technology to advance social change and improve their community and the world. Young people (age 12-24), living anywhere in the world, are eligible to apply. Application deadline is September 19, 2011.
