September 7, 2011 – The Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) released today a letter of support for its Impact Reporting and Investment Standards (IRIS) initiative, signed by 29 impact investors including large-scale financial institutions, asset managers, development finance institutions, institutional foundations, and investment funds.

Yesterday, the first large-scale analysis of IRIS performance data was released by the GIIN in a report titled Data Driven: A Performance Analysis for the Impact Investing Industry. On the heels of the report release, the letter signatories strongly encourage impact investment funds and their portfolio companies to adopt IRIS for their performance reporting, and to contribute data to the IRIS initiative for future analysis.

“The IRIS report released yesterday provides an exciting demonstration of the evidence base we can build for the impact investing industry through IRIS reporting,” said Amit Bouri, Director of Strategy and Development at the GIIN. “We are grateful to the many members of the GIIN Investors’ Council and other prominent impact investors who signed this letter in support of the IRIS initiative. Their support sends a strong signal that the investor community is eager to grow a social and environmental performance data set that will ultimately lead to more targeted and effective impact investing,”

IRIS is a universal language for social, environmental, and financial performance reporting. It was developed as a tool for the impact investing industry to improve transparency, increase the credibility of social and environmental performance data, and facilitate investment comparability and performance benchmarking. The IRIS reporting standards are available as a free public good at www.iris.thegiin.org, where any organization can reference and adopt the social, environmental, and financial performance indicators most relevant to its work. Organizations using IRIS can also contribute their performance data anonymously to the IRIS initiative for inclusion in aggregation and analysis by working with an IRIS data collection partner. The IRIS data collection partners who facilitated the contribution of performance data from 2,394 mission-driven organizations to the IRIS initiative in advance of the first IRIS data report are: the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs, Microfinance Information Exchange, and PULSE. The GIIN’s IRIS initiative is working to establish additional data collection partnerships with impact investment data aggregators and network associations.
