The Value of Social Strategy Workshop, ACEVO

Uday will be delivering a workshop on The Value of Good Strategy at the ACEVO CEO 2012 Summit on “Can your leadership face disruption?” on 6th July. Uday will be demonstrating the importance of understanding the value creation and how to communicate this internally and externally to create a strategy that allows every organisation to be robust but flexible to react and create opportunities whatever the economic climate.
FREE Workshop on Recruiting, Delegating and Team-Building, in partnership with the British Library
Uday will be running a FREE workshop as part of Red Ochre’s social enterprise support programme in partnership with the British Library Business & IP Centre. The workshop Recruiting, delegating and team building for social enterprises will take place on the 12th of July from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The venue is the British Library on Euston Road London.
The workshop will cover the following content: Recruiting and growing teams is one of the most difficult yet most crucial issues that growing enterprises face. This practical workshop helps to clarify your changing skills requirements as your enterprise changes. You will consider various options to recruit the appropriate skills. Motivating and supporting staff and creating effective teams is a crucial skill for success and we will consider ways to implement this. Entrepreneurs are also notoriously bad at delegation and the workshop will assist you in understanding how to learn to delegate. The workshop will also assist you in ensuring that your teams are aligned to your vision and that they contribute to making the enterprise sustainable, innovative, robust and successful.

    Disability in Camden Workshop
Uday ran a workshop for Disability in Camden, DISC, on June 1st. DISC had arranged a day on Investing in Young Disabled People. Uday’s workshop on “Being Enterprising” was the end session for the day pulling together the threads of the day as to how people with disability could better manage their lives and how to overcome challenges to generate incomes for themselves.
    Museum Development Officers' Conference
Uday was the keynote speaker at the Museum Development Officers' Conference, Swindon, on the 13th June. The association of Independent Museums are looking at ways to improve stakeholder engagement and how to increase the use of museums. Uday has already run some business planning workshops for museums and at the conference his workshop was on “Consulting users and Non-users. Making it meaningful. Learning from the Third Sector”.
The content was on the importance of understanding and embracing marketing, value propositions, understanding stakeholders needs and wants balanced against the core purpose of museums. Within the demanding mix is the absolute requirement to ensure that all employs are aligned to the vision and strategy of the museum and that they support efforts of engagement as positively as possible.
….thank you for the wonderful session you delivered for us Museum Development Officers on 13th June…. It was a great way to start the day, galvanising people and putting things in a wider context ...some of your phrases and metaphors persisted throughout the day, so it truly provided a great framework for the event.
    Glynis Powell,
Museum Development Officer (MDO) Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull

    May
    Universities UK Social Enterprise Event
Uday was asked to participate in a roundtable discussion on Social Enterprise by Universities UK during May. The discussion revolved around how to encourage universities, students and academics to embrace social enterprise and more importantly how social enterprise could be used as a vehicle for job creation and social change using university support and resources. Interestingly enough Uday was one of a handful of people at the discussion not a professor!!! In Uday’s opinion the universities have a long way to go yet to demonstrate that they understand social enterprise and can give sound practical advice and support to social entrepreneurs. The case studies presented though interesting were some way off being sustainable or demonstrating some form of social or environmental change.
    Charity Finance Group Annual Conference
Uday was a presenter at the Charity Finance Group’s, CFG, annual conference in May. The CFG conference on the theme “Inspiring Financial Leadership” attracted a record audience at the Queen Elizabeth Conference Centre in London. Uday’s presentation was on “How to Become a Learning Organisation”. (http://cfgac12.wordpress.cm/).
The concept of a Learning Organisation is on how any organisation can convert learning and experience into knowledge. The knowledge needs to appropriate and aligned to the organisation’s vision and strategy. The knowledge needs to be shared in a way that the whole organisation is pulling together. Too often organisations exist in a state where people are scared, or resent having, to communicate with each other and the knowledge in the individual heads exceeds the knowledge of the organisation. A dangerous place to be. The journey to becoming a Learning Organisation is difficult but necessary to create a robust, flexible, sustainable and successful organisation.
    .....................................................................................................................................
The workshop was addressed to students taking a degree course in Social Enterprise provided by the Bromley by Bow Centre in partnership with the University of East London programme.

Red Ochre Featured in Charity Finance Group Annual Report
Charities are increasingly focusing on learning ……
“As we hit the recession and funding is getting harder and harder to get, most organisations need to start thinking about how to become more sustainable, more innovative and more competitive in this environment. Almost every charity goes through a process of creating strategy, and quite often that strategy is driven through the senior management team and there is not much of a buy-in further down the line.”
“A learning organisation is one where experience, training, future trends are all brought in and collectively discussed; collectively that knowledge is shared and that knowledge is turned into learning and that learning has to be turned into action. To create a learning organisation that is going to be sustainable, successful and innovative it requires a culture change within the organisation, a mindset change. We need to create safe environments. We need to invest in going out and getting that knowledge and turning that knowledge into learning and that learning into action. This requires people working across silos, people from other departments talking to each other, and making sure that they actually understand what is going on, what is required of them and how ultimately that has to meet the charity’s vision and mission. Creating that safe environment where sacred cows can be challenged is very important.”
