Social Enterprise Coalition activity

A look ahead to 2010

A very happy new year to all of our members! Following a successful 2009, which included the first ever Social Enterprise Summit, the first year of the Social Enterprise Awards and the release of the results of the first ever State of Social Enterprise Survey, the Coalition is now looking forward to working with you to build on this momentum into 2010.  If you haven't already done so take a look at our Highlights from 2009 pamphlet which gives a round up of all Coalition activity during the past year.

2010 is likely to be a challenging and fascinating one for the movement as we witness the upcoming launch of the new Social Enterprise Mark, likely changes of government, and certain changes in public spending. Here at the Coalition the changes have already begun with the arrival of our new CEO Peter Holbrook who is reaching the end of his first week in charge.  Many of you will meet Peter and hear his first speech as CEO at Voice10 which is now less than four weeks away.

The conference, which this year will be themed ‘No more business as usual", takes place on February 1-2 in Cardiff. The programme is now available online and booking is well underway so reserve your place now! Headline speakers at the event include Philip Blond and John Denham MP, and the first day of the conference will host the official launch of the new Social Enterprise Mark.

Consultation response for the Department of Children, Schools and Families

The Department for Children, Schools and Families are consulting on the New Statutory Children's Trust Guidance and New Children and Young People's Plan Regulations. This document brings together guidance on Children's Trusts and Children and Young People's Plans into one piece of statutory guidance. It also includes the draft new Children and Young People's Plan regulations.

The Coalition will be submitting a response to this consultation. If your social enterprise has worked with your local Children’s Trust or fed in to your area’s Children and Young People’s plan, we’d like to hear about your experiences.

Please contact Olof Jonsdottir at olof.jonsdottir@socialenterprise.org.uk – the deadline for our submission to DCSF is Friday 29th January, so we’d be grateful to hear from you by Wednesday 27th.

Payment cap lifted for Community Interest Companies

The Regulator of Community Interest Companies has decided to raise the limits on payments they can make to investors.

The changes, which will come in to force on April 6, allow CICs to offer dividends of up to 20 per cent without reference to the Bank of England base rate. It is hoped that this will make them more attractive to potential investors.

The changes were announced yesterday by the CIC regulator Sara Burgess and were inspired by the results of last years consultation which found that most social investors thought the caps were too low.

Head of policy at the Social Enterprise Coalition Ceri Jones said the breaking of the link between the dividend per share and the Bank of England base rate was a 'very positive move'.

'This will allow the return offered by CICs to be based on the performance of the individual company, rather than the market as a whole,' said Jones.

The regulator said there would be a review of the caps again in two to three years time.

Read the stories in Third Sector and Social Enterprise magazine.

Ethical spending triples over last decade

The Co-operative Bank has just published its annual Ethical Consumerism Report for 2009 which shows that consumer spending on ethical products has tripled during the last decade.

The report shows that, last year, on average, every household in the UK spent £707 in line with their ethical values, up from £630 in 2006. However, overall ethical spend at £35.5 billion is still a small proportion of the total annual consumer spend of more than £600 billion.

Employees buy Scottish robot maker

One of Scotland's world-leading design and technology companies has been bought by its 30 employees.  Clansman Dynamics, based in East Kilbride, designs and builds robotic handling equipment which is used in forges and foundries in 34 different countries.

In just 15 years Clansman Dynamics has become one of the top three companies in the world working in its highly specialised field.  In the last three years its annual turnover has increased from £3m to £4.5m to £6.2m, and Clansman Dynamics is now the number one supplier of robotic foundry equipment to China.

The transfer to employee ownership has the full and enthusiastic backing of the original owner Dick Philbrick, who did not want the business to be bought be a rival.  He wanted to ensure the ongoing success of the enterprise by transferring ownership to the employees who had helped to build the business.  This was made possible by the personal investment of the employees topped up by loans from two funds managed by Co-operative & Community Finance (The Co-operative Loan Fund and ICO Fund plc) and from Baxi Partnership, which specialises in employee buyouts.

Legal helpline launched to support co-operatives and social enterprises

Every town and village could have access to local food co-operatives or initiatives by 2012, according to a new guide recently published by Co-operatives UK.  The guide, Simply Legal, is designed to help community enterprises with all they need to know about legal forms and organisational types for local food.

"2009 has been a record year for local food," says Ed Mayo, Secretary General of Co-operatives UK. "We have seen more and more initiatives become fully-fledged enterprises, from inner city food co-operatives and farmers' markets through to rural community-owned shops and community supported agriculture. Our Making Local Food Work programme is designed to help them on that journey."

‘Simply Legal' is part of a comprehensive package of support and advice which is provided to new and emerging community food enterprises across England.  Alongside the guide, a new telephone helpline on legal forms - 0161 246 2907 - has also been launched.

The aim is to help people to take control of their food and where it comes from, with the aim of supporting by 2012, 650 community food enterprises to increase access to and awareness of local food for 1 million people.

The 2nd edition of the Simply Legal' can be downloaded at www.cooperatives-uk.coop/SimplyLegal.
