RISE presents SW social enterprise evidence to Parliamentary Select Committee

RISE was recently invited to submit evidence and attend a parliamentary select committee regarding the contribution made by South West social enterprises in the following important sectors: low carbon technologies, creative industries and the digital economy.

RISE Chief Executive, Lucy Findlay, commented: “This was an important platform for social enterprises in South West England to be recognized for their contribution to the economy.

I welcomed the opportunity to advise the Committee that social enterprise should be seen as a mainstream business model and that social and environmental business considerations must not be lost from the economic recovery debate.”

RISE questions Cabinet Ministers in Exeter

As part of the Cabinet’s regional tour of the country, RISE was invited to question Ministers when they met in Exeter recently. Lucy Findlay (Chief Executive) attended the meeting and posed the question: “Why is social enterprise not being promoted more explicitly as a business model whilst emerging from the recession, given its economic, social and environmental credentials, rather than profit for shareholder motivations”.

Tessa Jowell MP meets with Social Enterprise Mark holder and CEO of RISE

Tessa JowellTessa Jowell met with Social Enterprise Mark holders Devon Doctors and Lucy Findlay, Chief Excutive of RISE on her recent visit to Exeter to discuss why Devon Doctors' governance structure is important to how they deliver their out-of-hours GP service in Devon. Lucy then went on to the Cabinet meeting held at Exeter Racecourse where she asked a question to the whole cabinet about why social enterprise is not being promoted more explicitly as a business model whilst emerging from the recession given its economic, social and environmental credentials rather than profit for shareholder motivations.

The new capital grants round for third sector organisations is now open

The application deadline is 5pm, 19 February 2010 for posted applications and midnight, 21 February 2010 for emailed applications. However, grants will be awarded on a rolling basis and there is only a limited pot of money available. In order to access funding, it is important that you submit your application as soon as possible. Any money awarded must be drawn down by 31 March 2010.

RISE - BAN - Help your clients win more contracts and respond effectively to tendering opportunities

Location - Exeter

On the 9 of March, the Business Advice Network event will focus on helping your clients win more contracts by responding effectively to tendering opportunities. Angela Heap will be our key speaker. Angela co-ordinates Social Enterprise London’s European Regional Development Fund Project ‘Opening New Markets’, which focuses on enabling third sector organisations to win contracts. She delivers regular training sessions on policies and procedures required for procurement, with a special focus on environmental policies.

In the afternoon, the business advisor Karin Jordan from Alchemy will be delivering a session on the use of a quick coaching tool/framework that will help you to support clients to explore options and agree a way forward especially when restricted with time.

The day will be a combination of presentations, feedback and discussions.
