Fair Trade News | May 21, 2010 | | Trade as One at School Whether you live in Africa or Atlanta, a good education means greater opportunity. It represents progress – a way for our children to build on their foundations and launch out themselves. Even more so in the developing world, where sending children to school means giving them a chance to escape the cycles of poverty and dependency in which so many are trapped. As summer beckons, and the school year winds down, we'll focus this newsletter on education, how it affects our partners all over the world, and how Fair Trade income is their best chance to secure a better life for their kids. Celebrations Over the next few weeks, we’ll be celebrating the accomplishments of all ages of students at graduations and parties, and we’ll be toasting their teachers, who play such an important role in shaping and directing. This year, we’re aiming to celebrate in a way that creates more celebrations all over the world. Fair Trade gifts create sustainable jobs in the developing world, and those fairly-paying jobs mean that children can be in schools, and not in the workforce. All too often the harsh realities of life in poverty mean that children aren’t afforded the chance to learn, and are therefore trapped in a cycle of poverty. Fair Trade breaks those cycles, and ensures a better life for the next generation. So this year, as you’re considering gifts for the grads and teachers you want to reward and thank, consider a gift that gives both ways – celebrating education here in America, and helping to provide it in the developing world.
