Introducing Shujog Opportunity for Impact Investment Shujog, a Bengali word for "opportunity", will prepare SEs in Asia to have the organizational accountability, sound governance, and fiscal accountability to raise impact investment funds from social venture funds or through its sister company Impact Investment Exchange (IIX). Through research, training, workshops, advocacy, strategic consulting, and technical expertise, Shujog will provide SEs with the knowledge and systems required to raise commercial capital in order to magnify their social and environmental impact.
New Team Members Shujog is happy to announce a number of distinguished additions to our team of advisors and managers: Watanan Petersik is an independent director and Chairperson of Shujog. Until recently, Watanan was Chief of Staff for Goldman, Sachs Asia ex-Japan. Prior to joining Goldman's Executive Office, Watanan spent five years in the Investment Banking Division in Asia. Watanan is a founding member of ASN in Asia, a support group for Ashoka, the global association of social entrepreneurs. Watanan is also an Aspen-Goldman Sachs Fellow with the Africa Leadership Initiative/South Africa and a senior moderator of the Aspen Institute.
Mona Sinha is the Director of Strategic Initiatives for Shujog. Mona began her professional career as an investment banker at Morgan Stanley, followed by a marketing career at P&G and Unilever, during which she restructured the Asia Pacific operations of Elizabeth Arden. Most recently, she worked on a project for Goldman Sachs Asia on the development of Asian leadership.
Natalie Williams advises Shujog on legal and policy issues. Natalie served in the New York State Attorney General's Office as the Chief of the Civil Rights Bureau and Deputy Bureau Chief. Natalie previously served as an Associate Counsel to President Clinton in the Office of the White House Counsel. Natalie was also a law clerk for Justice Sonia Sotomayor when the Justice served on the United States District Court.

UBS Philanthropy Forum Durreen also spoke about the development of impact investment on two panels for an audience of ultra high net worth individuals and private bankers at the UBS Philanthropy Forum Singapore 2010 in April. Microfinance Conference At the "Microfinance Investments in Asia" conference in January in Singapore, IIX Managing Director Robert Kraybill spoke about ways in which a social stock exchange can fit into the exit strategies of social venture funds.

Building the Ecosystem Market ReadinessOur market readiness program focuses on financial and social capacity building for social enterprises. The initiative explores to what extent SEs meet social assessment and financial criteria to list on a stock exchange where social, environmental and financial returns are given equal weights. | Impact Investment Forum: Bangladesh We've chosen Bangladesh, one of the centers of social enterprise in Asia, as a meeting place to bring together key players in the Impact Investment Community. In October, IIX will host its first Impact Investment Forum to explore impact investment opportunities across Bangladesh and introduce the work of IIX and Shujog. Participants will leave the conference with a clear understanding of the global and local issues surrounding this dynamic field. Discussion topics will include: Sustainable Development; Understanding the Capital Options; IIX: Building an Innovative Platform; Bangladesh Market Opportunities; Regulatory Environment; and Impact Measurement and Social Valuation. There will also be field visits to Bangladeshi social enterprises. The Forum will attract ecosystem partners such as government officials, banks, law firms, regulators, accounting firms, brokers, impact investors, and social enterprises. Senior AdvisorWe are delighted to announce Sanjiv Misra recently joined IIX as a senior advisor. He is currently Managing Director at Phoenix Advisers Pte Ltd, a boutique advisory and principal investing firm. He spent 11 years at Citigroup, where he was, variously, Head of the Asia Pacific Corporate Bank (APCB), Investment Banking and Head of Equity Capital Markets from 1997 until 2008. Sanjiv also spent over ten years in the Investment Banking Division at Goldman Sachs & Co, in New York, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Social Enterprise Mapping Shujog is conducting a mapping and analysis of Asian social enterprises, focusing on those that could be ready to raise capital either through social venture funds or on an exchange in the next 1-5 years. Impact Measurement Research Social impact measurement provides a tool to distinguish, rate, compare, and ultimately value the SEs. Our Impact measurement research focuses on choosing the most relevant tools for Asia by testing various methodologies in the field.Regulatory Framework Regulatory framework research will investigate how regulation influences the viability of capital raising by social enterprises, and what specific changes regulators can implement to enable greater ease and efficiency.IIX and Shujog are working closely with ecosystem, academic, and consulting partners on these various research streams.
