News on The Edge Welcome to the Social Edge update! The Lex Mundi Pro Bono Foundation is launching this week a new legal resource for the US social sector. If you need to know how to form a social venture or how to attract both investment capital and deductible contributions, LawForChange is now the place to go. While we were on the subject of finding the right legal information, we asked David Roll, Associate Director of the Lex Mundi Pro Bono Foundation, to help social entrepreneurs around the globe select the right lawyer. His advice: “Be prepared to explain your organization’s social mission and impact, and why you would be a good candidate for pro bono help.” And you should expect your lawyer to be responsive and to keep you posted on the progress of your legal project. Questions on what to expect from your lawyer or how to prioritize your legal needs? Share your experiences with David Roll. Then follow Kiva Fellow Jeremy Gordon in Kenya, where he wonders whether P2P funding may be introducing bias. He asks: “Is it possible that entrepreneurs may be compelled (or even encouraged) to transition into a business more popular to western lenders?” Another Kiva Fellow, Iyanna M. Holmes, describes how exhilarating it is to work with Liberia’s Local Enterprise Assistance Program. Dr. O offers his diagnostic on a new social media fund-raising tool developed by a Hollywood actor, while Untangled writes about the new wires being brought to Africa and Leila Janah recaps her Skoll World Forum experience. Jonathan Lewis writes about Root Capital, which has lent over $100 million to grassroots ventures since it was founded in 2002. And speaking of successful social enterprises: don’t forget to check the exciting ventures that were accepted in Santa Clara University’s Global Social Benefit Incubator. Many in this year’s class are finding renewable energy solutions to help off-the-grid communities escape extreme poverty. All are extremely impressive.
