Dear Skoll Newsletter Subscriber, We've posted the following stories to the Skoll Foundation Blog over the last two weeks: 2010 Skoll World Forum Highlights The 2010 Skoll World Forum focused on catalyzing collaboration for large scale change. Once again, over 800 delegates gathered from all corners of the world to engage in critical discussions, network, and share knowledge about the most innovative, sustainable solutions to our global challenges. An overview of all three days of the World Forum can be found on the Skoll blog and additional information and highlights are on the Skoll World Forum site including archived video and podcasts of every session. In conjunction with the World Forum, consulting firm McKinsey & Company focused on social entrepreneurs on "What Matters," its online platform for talking about key business issues. A number of essays on the site address the question "Can social entrepreneurs create large scale change?" Bunker Roy Joins Elite Group of Thinkers on the TIME 100 TIME Magazine released its annual list of the 100 people who most affect our world, and we were thrilled to see 2005 Skoll social entrepreneur Bunker Roy added to that elite group. A brief overview of Bunker's work and innovation at Barefoot College is described in TIME by author Greg Mortenson: "Roy combines humanitarianism, entrepreneurship and education to help people steer their own path out of poverty, fostering dignity and self-determination along the way. His simple formula holds a key to what nations and aid organizations might do to build a more just world." Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship Held in Washington The first Presidential Summit on Entrepreneurship was held in Washington on April 26 and 27, where the President noted the work of 2009 Skoll social entrepreneur Soraya Salti and 2007 Skoll social entrepreneur Roshaneh Zafar in his remarks. Sorarya's work with INJAZ Al-Arab and Roshaneh's establishment of the Kashf Foundation were just two of the many examples the President noted as he praised the work of entrepreneurs who have found innovative solutions to our global challenges. You can read a transcript of President Obama's remarks here. Sakena Yacoobi Discusses Feminism and Islam on NPR 2006 Skoll Social Entrepreneur Sakena Yacoobi may not think of herself as a feminist icon, but her tireless work on behalf of women and girls in Afghanistan through her Afghan Institute of Learning seems to be turning her into one. Sakena was a featured guest on NPR's "Talk of the Nation", along with author Isabel Coleman, who features Sakena in her new book "Paradise Beneath Her Feet: How Women are Transforming the Middle East." You can listen to the discussion here. |
