News on The Edge Welcome to the Social Edge update! During the process of rebuilding her Board, Andrée Sosler, Executive Director of the Darfur Stoves Project, received much advice on how to add to the diversity, perspectives and networks of current Board members. But some of the advice has been slightly contradictory. For example, one advisor suggests that she simply select the most influential member of her network, while another recommends that she find the most talented people in each functional area. One thinks she should recruit “big names,” while another thinks she should hire experts with the time and willingness to work pro-bono for the organization. Andrée Sosler is learning that “each organization has its own unique Board configuration, but we should all promote a culture of engagement while setting boundaries so the Board does not micromanage staff.” Tell her how you are building an effective Board of Directors, then join Leila Janah in Amsterdam as she is designing East Africa’s new Micro-Telecenters: “It’s Outsourcing 2.0, and it will give African workers a virtual career path and new learning opportunities.” Check in with Dr. O as he reviews a new player in the search engine monetization field: “It will help social entrepreneurs make money when their supporters search the Web.” Then travel to Vietnam where Kiva Fellow Elena Kuehn meets women who hold many jobs to survive and raise their families. Jonathan Lewis writes about Jensine Larsen’s media network, which also tells the narrative of women in their own voices: “Without voice, there is no influence, no power, no change and no hope.” Join this Week's Live Discussions How to Build a Board Each organization has its own unique Board configuration, but you should strive for diversity of perspectives and networks, says Andrée Sosler, Executive Director of the Darfur Stoves Project.
