Our mission is to enable households without reliable electricity to attain the same quality of life as those with electricity. We will begin by replacing every kerosene lantern with clean, safe and bright light. D.light is financed by prestigious venture capital firms including Nexus Venture Partners, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Garage Technology Ventures, Mahindra Group; with investment from leading social enterprise funds Acumen Fund and Gray Matters Capital. | | | | | | | D.light lanterns boost night studies | | In March 2010, D.light started a pilot program with Sikshana, an Indian organization aiming to improve the learning levels in public schools in developing countries. 84 Kiran lanterns were distributed to under-performing secondary school students in some villages in Bangalore, who were preparing for their final examination (SSLC). Villages suffered frequent power cuts in the evenings, and the dim and smoky Kerosene lanterns provided the only option for lighting for the students to study after sunset. Feedback from the 84 students who use our Kirans was enthusiastic: freed of any dependency on kerosene, students were able to increase their study time by 2 to 3 hours every night to review their books and homework. Results were remarkable: in a district where the average pass rate is about 67%, more than 82% of the formerly underperforming students granted with D.light lanterns earned their certificate. | | | | | | | | | | On May 18, our Nova S200 was awarded as a “Lighting Africa 2010 Outstanding Product”, for being one of the best off-grid lighting products available today to African consumers. The NOVA S200 successfully competed against over 20 other nominated products, and was chosen after extensive laboratory testing and field evaluations, according to such different criteria as design, performance, environmental impact, ease of use and affordability. The prize, which now allows D.light to exhibit a special certification label on its products, is awarded by Lighting Africa, a joint IFC and World Bank program that seeks to support the global lighting industry in developing affordable, clean, and efficient modern solutions for Sub-Saharan Africans with no access to the electricity grid. | | | | | | | | | D.light lanterns for Safari | |
| D.light’s East Africa office has recently started a new direct marketing campaign targeting 150 safari lodges in the area, which tipically consume large amounts of kerosene. The campaign will continue during the entire tourist season, with new emails ads every 2-3 weeks and the promotion in specialized tourist industry fairs, such as the recent Karibu Fair in Arusha. We thought you would enjoy the pictures of some of our ads! | | | | | | | Can't get enough D.light news?
