Out of the Ashes: Samasource's Successful Journey in Haiti Haitians live in a densely populated country (10 million people on an island smaller than Maryland), learn French and English at school, share a time zone with New York, and live a short, cheap flight away from Miami - this makes them great candidats for digital work. In a region where the chief economic activity is subsistence farming and 80% of the population lives in poverty, the type of work Samasource offers could make a dramatic impact. Immediately following the January 12, 2010 earthquake, "Mission 4636" was established to use the rapidity of SMS messaging to meet the urgent needs of the Haitian people. However, more needed to be done to bring long-standing hope for the future. On this front, Samasource partnered with 1000 jobs Haiti. As a Samasource Service Partner, 1000 Jobs Haiti aids in the creation of just, sustainable jobs for the youth in the region. Today, Samasource has trained and now brings work to over fifty workers at 1000 Jobs, Haiti. These employees now have a growing set of technical skills and, most importantly, are working to rebuild their country. The center is located in Mirebalais, a small town about an hour's drive from Port-au-Price. You can view interviews with the workers of 1000 Jobs, Haiti at the Samasource blog here. Two Former Goldman Sachs Bankers Travel to Remote Africa to Train Workers for Samasource Chelsea Seale (Director of Operations) and Pearl Chan (Spring Field Associate) traveled to the most rural parts of Kenya in late April to train potential Samasource workers as part of a joint project with Inveneo and Cisco. Working with mostly women and youth across three Community Knowledge Centers (CKCs) in the Nyanza Province, Chelsea and Pearl tested, screened and selected workers to join the Samasource platform through one of these new Service Partners. Though the power and internet connectivity were intermittent at times, the drive to find work by those in these communities was unwavering. With literacy rates matching unemployment rates at 70% in most parts of the Province, there is little opportunity for paying work even for those with a formal education. Samasource will continue to find partners in the highest poverty regions and bring work to those who need it the most. Samasource Reaches Record Sales, Adds 300 Additional Workers All the long hours and hard work that the dedicated staff of Samasource puts in daily have certainly paid off. Samasource has reached over $1.2 million in sales contracts! With much appreciated help from the Peery Family Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, Mulago Foundation, Flora Family Foundation and supporters like you, we now bring work to over 800 workers and expect to add another 300 over the next six months. Help Samasource Give Work Samasource Partners with Expedia's TravelRelief: The Power of this Partnership & How You Can Help The goal of TravelRelief, a program run by the Expedia Affiliate Network, is to help charities and non-profit organizations raise money for good causes by providing their supporters with a way to book hotels at a great internet rate and contribute money at the same time without paying extra. Samasource is 1 of only 8 organizations who have been chosen to partner with TravelRelief. This gives our supporters an exclusive opportunity to help through simply booking their next hotel stay through TravelRelief. When our supporters make hotel bookings on www.travelrelief.org/Samasource, Expedia Affiliate Network will donate at least 8% of the hotel booking price to Samasource. With an average hotel booking value of $300, we estimate TravelRelief.org would then give $24 per transaction to support Samasource. The program runs in partnership with Hotels.com, a subsidiary of Expedia, Inc., so generally users will find the same or very similar hotel rates on TravelRelief as on Hotels.com and Expedia.com websites. As always, we appreciate your support and wish you a great stay wherever you may go. Read More |
