On July 27, Skoll Foundation President and CEO Sally Osberg will speak at the Commonwealth Club of California as part of its year-long series on social entrepreneurship. The series kicked off in May with Muhammad Yunus, and will continue through next March. It features many of the leading voices within the field of social entrepreneurship, presenting a broad set of perspectives on the field, including Ashoka founder and chairman Bill Drayton, Root Capital founder and CEO William Foote, Acumen Fund CEO Jacqueline Novogratz, Kiva co-founder and CEO Premal Shah, and author Jed Emerson. All of the talks will be available by podcast and streaming video through the Commonwealth Club's website. The Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship Names 2010-2011 Skoll Scholars
The Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship has announced its Skoll Scholars for the 2010-2011year: Xavier Helgesen, Sean Holt, Tamsin Jones, Anima Sarah LaVoy and Nigel Tunnacliffe. The five recipients of the Skoll Scholarship were selected after a year-long search for the most promising social entrepreneurs to join the MBA program at Said Business School, Oxford University. The Skoll Scholarship is a competitive fellowship for students to pursue entrepreneurial solutions for urgent social and environmental challenges and provides funding to undertake studies at Oxford. Ceres Releases "21st Century Electric Utility" Report
Ceres recently released a new report on a clean energy future, titled The 21st Century Electric Utility: Positioning for a Low-Carbon Future, authored by Navigant Consulting. This important and timely report outlines the measures that today's utilities should undertake to successfully adapt to the needs of the 21st century. As the recent spate of high temperatures reminds us, the utility industry is vulnerable to some of the most far-reaching consequences of climate change, such as spikes in demand from increased frequency and intensity of heat waves. The report provides a road map for how electric utilities can begin providing cleaner, low-carbon electricity, while enabling customers to better manage and reduce their energy use. It also highlights the growing momentum to enact regulations and legislation encouraging clean technologies and reducing greenhouse gas pollution. Citizen Schools Receives $1 million Grant from National Science Foundation
The National Science Foundation has awarded a $1 million grant to Citizen Schools to support its science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) apprenticeships, specifically to increase computing apprenticeships nationwide. This prestigious grant will help Citizen Schools to significantly increase the number of students who have the opportunity to work side-by-side with professionals and graduate students from information technology and other scientific fields on projects ranging from computer game design to robotics to web design.
m2m Receives the Global Health Council's 2010 Best Practices in Global Health Award
Dr. Mitch Besser, mothers2mothers' Founder and Medical Director, recently attended the Global Health Conference in Washington DC, where he accepted the Global Health Council's Best Practices Award on behalf of mothers2mothers. The Council's annual award is given to individuals dedicated to improving the health of disadvantaged and disenfranchised populations and to recognize programs that address the links between health, development and poverty. Recipients of the Best Practices Award are selected for their ability to exhibit measurable results in the field, as well as the capacity and expertise to share, inspire and extend their work. With this award, m2m continues to be recognized as a leader in service delivery for Preventing Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV programs.
Final Deadline for Applications for 2011 Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship is August 4, 2010
The Skoll Foundation is looking for new applicants for the Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship, our flagship program to invest in leading social entrepreneurs around the globe who are advancing promising solutions to some of the world's most pressing problems. The next and final deadline for applications for the 2011 Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship is Wednesday, August 4, 2010. Following this deadline, we will be making adjustments aimed at streamlining and simplifying our application process.
As always, we are looking for social entrepreneurs whose work has the potential for large-scale positive change in the areas of tolerance and human rights, health, environmental sustainability, peace and security, institutional responsibility, and economic and social equity. In addition to alignment with one or more of these issue areas, Skoll Award winners typically exhibit many of the following characteristics: - Led by a visionary, effective social entrepreneur serving as a spokesperson for their issue
- Strong leadership team and board
- Clear mission and implementation model
- Unwavering focus on mission
- Well-established strong partnerships
- Commitment to systems, including for measurement and learning
- Diversified and mission-aligned funding sources
