Social Ventures Australia (SVA) invests in social change by helping increase the impact and build the sustainability of those in the social sector. Our investments are focused on high potential organisations that are fostering solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing our community.
Creating a pathway out of disadvantage
SVA website Armed with the experience developed over eight years of providing growth capital and strategic support to over 30 non-profit venture partners, along with the knowledge gleaned from 90 plus consulting assignments across the sector, SVA has taken the opportunity to reflect and identify the areas which we believe have the most potential for social impact.

This exercise has reinforced our belief that lifting education and employment participation levels is the most effective foundation for achieving sustainable, broad based and breakthrough change in disadvantaged communities.

Education and employment are synergistic: research shows that unemployment rates become progressively lower as educational attainment levels increase. Conversely, intergenerational educational attainment progressively increases as employment levels increase, since employed parents provide better support to their children´s educational career.

As we increase our focus on the education and employment fields, we´ll be introducing new partners, new initiatives and new opportunities for collaboration.

A different vision
Siomon Faivel Simon Faivel, a consultant with SVA, was about to become a dad when he began his engagement with Vision Australia, the largest provider of services nationally to Australians who are vision impaired. Speaking with parents of vision impaired children and teenagers, Simon was keenly affected by the positive difference Vision Australia was making in their lives.

Simon shares his story in this Heart of the Matter piece.

SVA launch Private Ancillary Fund Service
Karen Loblay, Sam Meers and Ann Johnson SVA has launched a new service to encourage more people to engage in philanthropy by taking advantage of the regulatory developments that make private ancillary funds such a simple, efficient and cost effective vehicle for ongoing planned giving.

SVA´s Private Ancillary Fund Service offers a one-stop-shop for Australian philanthropists, offering general advice, in-house establishment and administration services, referrals to specialist advisors (if required), and ongoing support to PAF founders. The service also connects those considering establishing a PAF with philanthropists who already have one in place, to enable real-world experiences and learnings to be shared.

The launch event was hosted by Michael Traill AM, Chief Executive of SVA and Chris Cuffe, Chair of the SVA Future Trust. Guests at the launch included David Gonski AC, a member of SVA´s Private Ancillary Fund Advisory Council, Gilbert & Tobin head Danny Gilbert, Sam Meers representing the Nelson Meers Foundation, and Gary Gerstle of MAN Investments Australia.

Crazy for impact
Sydney cohort graduates The School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE) recently celebrated the graduation of its second Sydney cohort - fifteen social entrepreneurs each seeking to address an important social or environmental challenge in their community. Benny Callaghan, CEO of the SSE, talks about the passion, drive and a certain ´craziness´ that drives these social entrepreneurs, using the story of 2010 graduate Michael Combs of CareerTrackers as a case in point.

Winners are grinners
Second Bite SVA venture partner SecondBite was recently announced as the award winner in the ´New Ways To Engage With The Community´ category at the Victorian Department of Planning and Community Development summit for their Community Connect™ program.

SecondBite Community Connect™ is a ground breaking model of redistributing surplus food to community groups, which partners a local community food program with a local food donor to enable nutritious surplus fresh food to be collected and distributed to people in need. SVA congratulates SecondBite CEO, Katy Barfield and her dedicated team, on their achievement.

CentacareAnd the good news continues with Sr. Margaret Flynn, Chief Executive of former SVA venture partner Centacare Wilcannia-Forbes, winning the White Pages Community and Government category in the Telstra NSW Business Women´s Awards.

The former school principal and family counsellor established the Centacare agency in the State´s western region with an annual budget of $3,000 – it now stands at $16 million. At the heart of SVA´s strategy is a determination to improve education outcomes for 220,000 young Australians living in some of our nation´s most disadvantaged communities. On 14 October a small group of SVA supporters gathered to hear showcases from Sam Perry
(AIME), Viv White (Big Picture Education Australia) and Melodie Potts-Rosevear
(Teach For Australia). These three leading education practitioners are changing the lives of Australian children who would otherwise be trapped in a cycle of disadvantage and SVA is proud to support their work.
