RISE is providing a range of support to senior managers currently working in the NHS to help with the set-up of new social enterprises. By raising awareness of the key issues and providing specialist support in the business planning and staff engagement processes, RISE is dispelling myths around the move to social enterprise from the NHS. RISE and its associates have been advising on the next steps for the implementation of new business plans and is pleased to be able to offer this service to emerging social enterprises working in health and social care.
Julie Harris, Chief Executive of RISE stated:
“Whatever motivation exists to develop new social enterprises in the health sector, it is important to understand that they do present a major opportunity to preserve the ethos of our National Health Service, which we all feel passionate about, and to develop new and highly successful models of social enterprise. With our support and the support of other social enterprises, we can help them become thriving social enterprises.”
“In order for these social enterprises to truly succeed there is a responsibility on us all - the wider movement - to get involved and help them to develop and flourish. We are calling for the support from leaders in the social enterprise sector to make sure understanding of social enterprise grows inside these organisations, as there is no-one better to articulate the challenges and success.”
“Dealing with the unions and wider staff perceptions on the issues associated with social enterprise as a preferred option has been very revealing. In my opinion, there are some issues which will exist whether the organisation stays in the public sector, moves into private sector or becomes a social enterprise – for example TUPE and in particular protection of existing pensions. The pensions issue is one which will have to be addressed; it is not specific to a decision to move into social enterprise.”

They are currently seeking a non-executive director with the appropriate strategic vision and skills to join the Board of their subsidiary trading company in order to help develop this approach. Age UK Gloucestershire are particularly keen to find someone with experience in the retail sector, ideally the charity retail sector, but a broader range of business experience would be considered.
