Social Enterprise UK activityThe search is on for photographs that best capture the spirit of the UK’s thriving social enterprise sector. The Social Vision photography competition is run by Triodos Bank in partnership with Social Enterprise UK and Social Enterprise Live. Heats will be held in the nine English regions as well as in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The 13 winners of these heats will be announced in November on Social Enterprise Day and go into the UK final. A new People’s Vote Award has also been introduced, which will be decided by online public vote and not the judging panel. The overall winners will be announced at a special event in London later in the year. The winning photographers will each be awarded a £500 cash prize by Triodos Bank, and the winning social enterprises will also receive a £500 cash prize, plus a year’s free membership to Social Enterprise UK, a one year subscription to Social Enterprise Live magazine and two tickets to Social Enterprise UK’s annual event in 2012. The competition runs until 31 October. Entries can be made via the Triodos website. Peter Holbrook has responded to the government’s announcement that it is to ask investors to purchase Social Impact Bonds to fund new schemes to support troubled families by calling for the pilots to be measured. He said last week: “These pilots are to be welcomed and for the social enterprise sector Social Impact Bonds offer an opportunity for growth. However, it is early days and we need to see a stronger evidence base built. It will be vital that the four local authorities work closely with social enterprises and charities to develop realistic targets so that the success of the projects can be measured, otherwise there’s a danger that damage could be done to their progress. It would be a great pity to see Social Impact Bonds fall at the first hurdle. The potential of Social Impact Bonds to tackle social issues is very exciting, as is the wider social investment agenda.” The All Party Parliamentary Group on Social Enterprise is a cross party group of politicians who support the social enterprise movement. Social Enterprise UK hosts the secretariat for the group and has organised a reception in the Houses of Parliament from 6.30 – 8.00pm on Tuesday 18 October to launch Fightback Britain: a report on the State of Social Enterprise Survey 2011. Fightback Britain details the findings of the largest analysis of the social enterprise sector in the UK, conducted by Social Enterprise UK and supported by the Co-operative Bank. It has uncovered an emerging generation of businesses that are both starting up and operating in Britain’s most deprived communities. It also reveals that social enterprises are twice as likely as mainstream businesses to have reported growth in the last year. We’re delighted to be able to invite Social Enterprise UK members along to this event to hear more about the report and meet parliamentarians and thought-leaders from around the UK. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. To reserve a place, please fill in the registration form on our website. 22 September Manchester A one day event which will focus specifically on the relationship between the CEO and Chair for social enterprises moving out of the public sector into social enterprise models.
