Subsidized intensive consultancy support available for your organisation

Sometimes dedicated support can make all the difference to get your strategy, business planning, management and financial planning right. We can offer two days of intensive support at the end of which you will have a document that will have clarified your strategy and business plan. This will improve your ability to access additional funding or finance. Don’t delay in contacting us - the support is only available for a few more months.

Eligibility:

  • You need to be already operational with at least 1 employee.
  • You must have the ambition to grow and be seeking additional finance to facilitate

arc – building better business


Business in the Community have launched arc: building better business, a Business in the Community initiative which supports social enterprises by providing them with free, expert advice to help them grow.

Did you know….

... that social enterprises are outstripping SMEs in growth, resilience, confidence and innovation?

According to a new report from NPC “Are social enterprises more resilient in times of limited resources?” based on research among 153 social enterprises carried out in 2010:

  • Social enterprises are 20% more likely to survive than a typical UK business.
  • 66% of new social enterprises were still going five years after they started, compared with 47% of UK companies.
  • Social enterprises experienced 17% annual growth on average, compared with 6% for a small business.
And this, despite 70% of the organizations surveyed were working in the 20% most deprived local authorities of the UK!
These findings suggest that the organisations are not only achieving their social aims but also successfully engaging in commercial activity. Read more...

Another recent report from Social Enterprise UK “Fightback Britain” goes further to evidence that :

  • Social enterprises employ more people relative to turnover than mainstream small businesses.
  • Social enterprises are growing more than SMEs: 58% of social enterprises grew last year compared to 28% of SMEs.
  • Social enterprises are outstripping SMEs in business confidence, with 57% of social enterprises predicting growth in comparison to 41%10 of SMEs.
  • Social enterprises are outstripping SMEs in innovation, with 55% of social enterprises launching a new product or service last year, as opposed to 47% of SMEs11.

Upcoming events for October & November

Red Ochre organises NGO and British Council tour

Red Ochre are pleased to welcome another delegation from China this week. Martin Cooper has organised a great programme for them to meet some of the best social enterprises, charities and foundations in London. The delegates are all from a large NGO, the China Youth Development Foundation that works across China with young people. More on the tour will be featured in the next newsletter, but if you are interested in us organising a study / visit programme for overseas visitors (or UK groups), please get in touch.

An Enterprising Future - 10th November 2011


Social Enterprise UK and Community Matters are hosting a social enterprise business support event for children and young people’s organisations which will take place on Thursday 10 November in London.

The event will bring together social enterprise start-ups and VCO organisations looking to move to a social enterprise model within children and young people's services. As well as hearing from inspirational speakers and learning about issues facing the sector, the event will provide you with a forum in which you can learn new skills, develop your business acumen, and better understand the social enterprise model. The event will take you on a journey through setting up a social enterprise, starting with a plenary session and introduction to the business model, and then breaking off into workshops, one-to-one surgeries, and networking sessions.

Red Ochre are running three workshops on this day, they include:

  • Accessing and securing finance
  • Winning public sector contracts
  • Evaluating impact

Global Entrepreneurship Week 14 - 18th November 2011

Red Ochre are taking part in speed mentoring sessions at the British Library Business & IP Centre during the week of Global Entrepreneurship week.  

Monday 14th November
Starting a business can be overwhelming and you’ll need to make sure you’re up-to-speed on all the essentials, such as finance, business planning and marketing.
On Monday 14th November, our Red Ochre experts Robert Foster and Anne-Helene Teyssedre along with other experts that can help advise you on all the basics to ensure success and help you avoid common mistakes. 

Wednesday 16th November
The gap between male and female entrepreneurs is closing and the UK boasts some fantastic female role models. Social Enterprise UK today unveiled the Society profits campaign, aimed at putting social enterprises at the forefront of promoting the no-nonsense message direct to customers. Launch of London ESF Community Grants

London Councils’ European Social Fund (ESF) programme has reopened, with projects designed to help unemployed Londoners find jobs invited to apply for a share of £11.3 million fund. The programme matches funds from 15 participating London boroughs with the European Social Fund, which was set up to improve employment opportunities in the European Union and help raise standards of living.
