主題︰ Major Project Launched to Boost Kala-Azar Elimination Strategies
Dear Houghton, It is with pleasure and excitement that we'd like to share with you today's announcement released by our partner Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) about an international consortium to boost kala-azar control and elimination strategies in India and Bangladesh, where the concentration of disease burden is among the world's highest: "...DNDi, together with OneWorld Health (OWH) and the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), will collaborate with the National Control Programmes of India and Bangladesh, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), the Bihar State Health Society, and the Indian Council for Medical Research to carry out the consortium's projects. The projects will generate the data necessary for Indian and Bangladeshi Ministries of Health to select, adopt and implement the best management strategies to support control and elimination of this deadly disease..." Please visit http://www.dndi.org/press-releases/1003-vl-asia.html for a full press release. Kala-azar is a potentially fatal infectious disease that plagues 65 countries primarily in the developing world. The population at risk is estimated at 200 million, and officially, 50,000-60,000 deaths result from kala-azar each year. If left untreated, this disease is almost always fatal. At OneWorld Health, we are strongly focused on kala-azar eradication. Together with our partners, we are ready to contribute to control and elimination strategies for this deadly disease. For more information on this project, please visit http://www.dndi.org/component/content/article/1001.hrml. Sincerely, OneWorld Health Team |
