Riders for Health is an award-winning social enterprise working to make sure all health workers in Africa have access to reliable transportation so they can reach the most isolated people with regular and predictable health care. November 2011 Headline Quicklinks Do you want to learn more about Riders for Health’s programmes in Africa? We have now updated our interactive map and each country page contains a description of our work and the impact that it is having on health care in that country. This is also the place to find our series of new impact videos. As each video is added to the website it will be included in the country pages alongside our series of impact reports. The latest video focuses on Riders for Health’s work in Tanzania with local organisation, The Diocese of Masasi. Health workers are now using six motorcycles to visit remote communities and set up clinics. To watch the video, click here. On each page you will also find a feedback form. At Riders for Health we want to be sure that we are giving you the information about our work that you are looking for. That is why your feedback is so important. And best of all, by filling out a feedback form you will be entered into our prize draw. By improving transport for health systems in Africa, Riders for Health is helping give ministries of health the tools they need to deal with a wide range of vital health issues. Riders for Health is posting a series of new reports that will show how reliable transport is impacting on specific health areas. In the first report we look at the different ways in which reliable transport is helping to prevent or treat tuberculosis. The report shows that 86% of all health workers mobilised by Riders for Health are involved in preventing or treating tuberculosis as part of their role. Thanks to a reliable motorcycle or four-wheeled vehicle health workers can provide education, disease surveillance, diagnosis and treatment in even the most isolated communities. Riders for Health is one of only 13 organisations shortlisted for the international Boehringer Ingelheim and Ashoka Changemakers Making More Health competition. Shortlisted from more than 470 entries, Riders for Health was recognised for our innovative Sample Transport programme which addresses one of the most fundamental health care needs in Africa – the quick and reliable transportation of diagnostic samples and test results. Riders for Health is now asking people to vote for our innovation in an online poll. The three winning organisations will each receive a $10,000 cash prize to help further their idea. Simply click on the badge to the right to place your vote now. Voting is open from November 9th to November 30th, you can also register your vote at www.changemakers.com/morehealth and on the Changemakers Facebook page http://apps.facebook.com/changemakers/morehealth. Hundreds of people came out to support the official charity of MotoGP at Riders for Health’s annual fundraising event, Dià de los Campeones, at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia on Thursday 3rd November. Despite the rain, dedicated fans were able to see MotoGP teams gearing up for the final race of the 2011 season. The riders and fans also helped to raise thousands of Euros as stars from all three racing classes took to the stage to auction off signed t-shirts, caps, racing boots and gloves. Dani Pedrosa was joined on stage by two female fans who read a moving letter in memory of MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli who was tragically killed in a racing accident at the Malaysian grand prix. Everyone in the crowd was in agreement when the girls said Marco’s untimely death was a loss to the whole motorsport community. The traditional Day of Champions ride-in to the circuit was lead by Riders’ co-founder, Randy Mamola, who was also joined by Red Dwarf actor Danny John-Jules, BBC MotoGP presenter Matt Roberts and Yamaha dealer Steve Keys. The trio had just completed their Viva Valencia motorcycle adventure in aid of Riders for Health. Matt Roberts was riding the Yamaha R1 ridden by Jorge Lorenzo on a parade lap at the 2010 Isle of Man TT. The Yamaha has been signed and will be one of the star lots at the Arai auction, at Motorcycle Live on Sunday 20th November where its sale will help to support Riders for Health’s work in Africa. Riders for Health would like to thank all the teams, riders, circuits and everyone at MotoGP for their support throughout the season. It is thanks to the support of MotoGP that Riders for Health are able to provide access to health care for over 10 million men, women and children across rural Africa. For more information or to support the Viva Valencia trip, visit www.motoventures.co.uk. Riders for Health is incredibly lucky to have so many dedicated supporters who work hard to raise money and raise awareness for our important work in Africa. Park Hall Financial Services adopted Riders for Health as their official charity two years ago and have already raised over £1,000 for us through raffles, bake sales and selling donated books. We would like to say a huge thank you for your fundraising efforts which are helping us to mobilise more health workers across rural Africa with reliable transport. If you would like to fundraise for us, email Elizabeth at edunn@riders.org. |
