| "To develop social enterprises, you need to develop social entrepreneurs...and expose them to entrepreneurial role models, case studies, and experiential learning opportunities..." - Randall Kempner, Executive Director Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) |
To be successful, Social Enterprises need to operate in an ecosystem that has supportive institutions as well as capable lawyers, accountants, and policy makers among others that understand social capital markets. More importantly, they need an ecosystem that will assist in capacity building from the individual level up to the institutional level. As a lawyer for the United Nations Global Compact and Principles for Responsible Investment Initiatives, I worked to develop an ecosystem to support both companies that wanted to embed ESG into their businesses and investors that wanted to use the power of the purse to support such businesses and move others in that direction. This involved collaboration between the UN, governments, companies, investors, and NGOs working towards a common purpose. ADB, EDB, ANDE, Impact Law Ventures, The Lien Centre for Social Innovation, McKinsey & Company, Mercy Corps, and many more provide the ecosystem support that Social Enterprises need. These entities will be at the Impact Forum 2012 to share case studies and discuss collaborative ways on how to develop a nurturing ecosystem for Social Enterprises and Impact Investors. Some sessions are below. - Connecting Markets through the Ecosystem: Creating the vibrant ecosystem to facilitate change-making transactions for social enterprises.
- Technology & Inclusive Access: How innovative technology is a game changer for the underserved populations of Asia
- Building the Singapore Hub: How and why Singapore is becoming the Silicon Valley of Social Enterprises and Impact Investing in Asia
- The Innovation Imperative: Corporate CSR programs have begun embracing social enterprises as a signature sustainable program, but what is the true impact of this?
