| On a plane flight this week I dove into the most comprehensive book about Business as Mission I've ever read. Business As Mission: A Comprehensive Guide to Theory and Practice by Neal Johnson is over 400 pages and is a great read for students and business leaders already interested in Business as Mission but are looking to get the full picture. Here's the review from the publisher: "Business as mission (BAM) is a mission strategy whose time has come. As global economics become increasingly interconnected, Christian businesspeople and entrepreneurs have unanticipated opportunites to build kingdom-strategic business ventures. But Christian companies and business leaders do not automatically accomplish missional purposes. BAM requires mastery of both the world of business and the world of missions, merging and contextualizing both into something significantly different than either alone. C. Neal Johnson offers the first comprehensive guide to business as mission for practitioners. He provides conceptual foundations for understanding BAM's unique place in global mission and prerequisites for engaging in it. Then he offers practical resources for how to do BAM, including strategic planning and step-by-step operational implementation. Drawing on a wide variety of BAM models, Johnson works through details of both mission and business realities, with an eye to such issues as management, sustainability and accountability. Business as mission is a movement with enormous potential. This book breaks new ground in how faith and work intersect and are lived out in crosscultural contexts, where job creation and community transformation go hand in hand. Come, participate in what may well be one of the most strategic mission paradigms of the 21st century." | |

| Partners WorldWide Creates 1,141 New Jobs in 2009 | By Doug Seebeck of Partners Worldwide - For businesspeople in our Partners Worldwide network, following a call to serve God is not limited to preaching in a pulpit: "A businessman can minister in his own business," says Timothy, one of our Ugandan partners. "In all things we can make our work our calling and serve the Lord."I agree with Timothy. Partners Worldwide has seen profound transformation as Christian businesspeople all over the world live our their ministry through their business. Last year our 46 partner affiliates in 20 countries created 1,141 new jobs and helped member businesses and farms retain 22,016 jobs that are supporting families and transforming lives! We are grateful for the support of friends like you who make possible the work of Partners Worldwide. | Business as Missions: Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven | By Allan Lunsford at Insidework.net - Type in the Google search "business as missions." You'll find lots there, reflecting an increasing tempo of conversation aboutmarketplace ministry...enough to suggest it could be the Next Big Thing, as far as many Christian communities are concerned. I appreciate the sentiment . . . sort of. What concerns me is wondering whether the conversation is informed by the biblical text-whether people are re-framing their understanding of business in a biblical worldview or simply putting a new coat of paint on the old structure called "missions"- because I don't think the old structure is transferable. I think it's an example of the "new wineskin/old wineskin" thing Jesus talked about: No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse. And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, he pours new wine into new wineskins. - Mark 2:21-22 | Linked In Discussion: | I'm looking for the best positive examples of business as a transformational, redemptive, or powerful positive change-agent force in the lives of individuals and/or a community. I'm looking examples of all kinds, not just BAM examples. I'd like modern day examples or historical. Two examples (and even then not the best examples) are: 1) Oskar Schindler - saved the lives of many at great risk to himself. Business played a key role in saving lives that perhaps no other organization could have. Certainly not an example of a BAM, but an example of how business can be redemptive (small 'r'). 2) Jean Valjean (Les Miserables) - transformed the community he lived in through raising up a successful industry. Industry created jobs, which created income for many people, which created social well-being. Regretfully, this is a fictitious example, but the story is definitely supportive of a Christian world view. I'd love to get a few real life Jean Valjean examples. If you have any examples to offer, if they are current day examples, please consider whether the example would want to be cited. We do not need to "expose" anyone who does not want to be "outed."
