Fw: Red Ochre Enewsletter - February 2010

"When you do the common things in life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world." George Washington Carver

What is Social Entrepreneurship?

Statement of Faith
You can find other "Market with Meaning" but you definitely want to see "Profit with Purpose".
I personally "Believe in Kingdom Transformation" because I know there is only ONE "Life for Significant".

ACES High! Event

The Aylesbury Entrepreneurs are hosting a lunch at the Glaziers Hall on Tuesday 2nd March to celebrate their success. Nine months ago there were no social enterprises on the Aylesbury Estate, now ten enterprises have started up. The Entrepreneurs will be describing their ‘journeys’ from the day they started on the Red Ochre ACE business courses, took part in the Aylesbury Arena (a Dragons’ Den-type event), to where they are now. They’ll be showcasing their products (from art-deco furniture to ethical clothing) and services (music therapy to a Chess club supported by a Grand Master). Please join us by contacting Anna at anna@redochre.org.uk

Ex-Dragon Champions Social Enterprise

Uday with Doug Richards

Doug Richard's of Dragon's Den Fame now runs the School for Startups. This is a rolling programme to encourage enterprise in the UK. Doug being American does things big - his presentations are to huge audiences and increasingly these are streamed so as to connect to even more people.

The growth in interest led Doug to create a half day event specifically for Social Enterprise at the Royal Institution on the 19th of January. In front of an audience of hundreds Doug spoke in his inimitable and amusing way about the fundamentals of starting a successful enterprise. A succession of social entrepreneurs spoke about their experiences and challenges.

A large part of the day was devoted to finance issues. Red Ochre's Managing Director Uday Thakkar shared a half hour session with Doug and discussed and answered questions on "What type of Social Enterprise are you?". The question and answer session touched extensively on legal structures and the challenges they present to financing and scaling up social enterprise in the UK.

The 6th Social Enterprise Coalition annual conference was held in Cardiff on the 1st and 2nd February. Each conference builds on the previous one and grows in strength and number.

This conference said goodbye to Jonathan Bland and hello to Peter Holbrook the new Chief Executive. Peter has ambitions to grow social enterprises in the UK and we wish him luck with this.

Uday Thakkar with Peter Holbrook

Robert Foster of Red Ochre with Kevin Maton of Social Enterprise West Midlands.

The conference also saw the roll of the Social Enterprise Mark. Uday Thakkar commented, “The concept of a social enterprise mark is a great idea and long overdue. Social enterprise needs to become the preferred business model for all businesses and for this we need to promote and encourage a set of values. My fear is that this version of the Mark is limiting as to who can participate. Will it pigeonhole those that are already converts and exclude new comers? How will the Mark work for those seeking alternative finance and methods of operating?

I remain sceptical and feel that it has been formulated by those within the sector on historic assumptions. We need to take a futuristic and holistic look at what might be achieved by creating a broader spectrum of social enterprising organisations”.

Social Enterprise Growth in Japan

A team of Japanese social entrepreneurs and members of the Japanese Cabinet Office visited the UK to get a better understanding of the social enterprise sector. In particular they wanted to understand the legal structures and how social enterprise is encouraged and supported by the government here.

The visit was facilitated through Imperial College and a previous Japanese academic study that had been supported by Red Ochre.

The discussion was wide ranging and touched on the problems particularly on the short comings of the current range of legal structures and the problems these caused in obtaining finance and achieving scale.

Red Ochre Profile

Each month we’re going to let you know what one of our Red Ochre team has been up to. This month we feature:

Penny Daly, Director of Red Ochre

What a good month this has been! It started in Oman and the UAE, a mix of holiday and meetings. The latter were about Red Ochre’s Aylesbury Community Enterprise (ACE) model of business training and 1:1 support to help people start up businesses. There’s a real interest in this and, hopefully, some Emirates Foundation people will be joining us at ACES High!, our showcase event about the Aylesbury project, on 2nd March. Leaving the sun and returning to the snow was tough – so I’m keen to develop this Middle East link! Another highlight of the month was being part of the Volunteer Centre Westminster’s ‘Overall Winner 2010’ team for volunteering partnerships. This was for the Mentoring into Employment programme whereby Department for Transport fast-track graduates mentored unemployed people from the Churchill Gardens Estate, Westminster (see News and Services).  I was involved in the design and delivery of the programme.  I’m also working on the Community Alliance peer-to-peer mentoring project and another with the Cardinal Hume Centre. As a change from mentoring programmes, Robert and I delivered a Community Champions workshop for Inspire East, EEDA, in Cambridge. I’m training City Guides in the build up to 2012 and also supporting young people on the Future Jobs Fund. So lots of challenging and exciting projects on the go at the moment.
