Many SVNers Among Businessweek's "Most Promising Social Entrepreneurs"
SVN members continue to lead the way and a number of them were recently recognized in Businessweek's list of "America's Most Promising Social Entrepreneurs 2010." SVN member organizations Napo Pharmaceuticals, Roxbury Technology and Organic Valley made the list. SVNers and Politicos Turn Out for Chicago Green Fest
Mayor Richard M. Daley and Governor Pat Quinn helped kick off the fourth annual Chicago Green Festival where they joined SVN Board Member Denise Hamler, Director of Green America's Green Business and Green Festival Programs, to cut the opening ribbon. During the ceremony, Illinois Governor Quinn signed legislation into law that mandates energy savings of state buildings. Many SVN members were on hand to celebrate the green innovations and businesses which are creating a more sustainable world. Click here to learn more about the event.
Tom Szaky on "How I Saved My Company"
SVN member Tom Szaky, CEO and founder of TerraCycle, took part in a new series from the New York Times called "How I Saved My Company." Tom explained how he turned his company around from losing $2.2 million annually to projecting $3.2 million in profits this year. Tom recorded a video of himself explaining his business strategy for the Times which you can view here. Natalia Allen in Fast Company's "100 Most Creative People in Business"

Natalia Allen, founder of
Design Futurist, was selected by Fast Company as one of "The 100 Most Creative People in Business". As an undergrad she won the Designer of the Year award at Parsons the New School for Design. Today, she's working with brands like Quiksilver, Nike, Best Buy and Cambridge University. Looking forward, her own fashion line will debut in fall 2011. She explained to

Indigenous Designs celebrated its 15th anniversary and presented its Fall line at its West Hollywood Fashion for Eco-Passion event recently. Stars from "Mad Men" and "Nip/Tuck" joined SVN member and Indigenous co-founder

Martha Shaw Completes First CleanTech Exec Program at NYU Poly
SVN member Marth Shaw, CEO of Earth Advertising, has just graduated as part of the inaugural class of NYU Polytechnic Institute's Clean Tech Exec Program. The program's goal is to train executive leadership to help speed up the rate at which clean tech ventures can be scaled from lab-level breakthroughs to viable businesses. Martha explained that she worked on "the structuring of a cleantech commercialization conduit to help new technologies get beyond tipping point where they often fail to scale up." MaryAnne Howland on Green Jobs and in Black Enterprise

MaryAnne Howland wrote an article in the LOHAS Journal entitled "
Where Are the Green Jobs?" She dives into the issue of engaging minority communities with the much publicized rise of the green collar economy and the $125 million per year the Green Jobs Act is supposed to bring. MaryAnne also spoke with
Black Enterprise Magazine this month about green jobs and said, "Today's most forward-thinking companies incorporate some green practices into their corporate responsibility programs. That should be a wake-up call for entrepreneurs and job seekers. This trend has created the need for a green supply chain." Click

Workforce, Inc. Profiled in Green For All Case Study

$300K Granted for Burlington Natural Food Co-op
North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue recently announced a $300,000 grant for the construction of a new co-op grocery store in downtown Burlington, N.C. SVN member Eric Henry, who sits on the Board of Directors, says he hopes the 7,000-square foot natural food store will offer fresh meat and produce with a focus on locally grown, made and packaged products.
