News on The Edge Welcome to the Social Edge update! “As I attended the Skoll World Forum and joined virtual networks such as Social Edge, I noticed that Asians, with the exception of Indian social entrepreneurs, were a minority,” writes Yvonne Li from Hong Kong. So in response to Rod Schwartz’s provocative piece, “Are the only innovations in social entrepreneurship Anglo-Saxon?”, Yvonne Li and her team at Avantage Ventures are offering eight case studies to show the state of innovation in social enterprises in the Asia Pacific region. We will present them over a period of four months to encourage dialogue and discussion, starting this week with Timothy Ma and the Senior Citizens Home Safety Association in Hong Kong. Yvonne Li is also hosting this week a discussion on why Asia Pacific social entrepreneurs are underrepresented in the global scene. Three main reasons: language, culture, and history. Join Yvonne Li and her Beijing and Hong Kong teams in the conversation, then travel to Central Asia where Kiva Fellow Sam Trauffer explains how microfinance can help fight rampant corruption in Kyrgyzstan. From the other side of the world, Magogodi Makhene reflects on fashion: “Perhaps the most sustainable fashion for Africa is something bold enough to stick to outstanding design and a loud, obnoxious but fool-proof Made In Africa stamp.” From the virtual world, Beth Kanter and Allison Fine give valuable advice on social capital, which you need to achieve social change. Social media colleagues Lucy Bernholz, Edward Skloot and Barry Varela describe how funders are experimenting with new kinds of peer networks, while Untangled reflects on Google Power. Speaking about networks: Jonathan Lewis writes about Reach Global, which provides education to the poorest women of India through a network of franchisees: “The truly commanding clarity, the powerful truth? The one resource poor women have in abundance is the ability to learn and change.” Join this Week's Live Discussions Social Entrepreneurs in Asia Social entrepreneurs from the Asia Pacific region are numerous but often underrepresented in the global scene.
