Delivering Solutions: Social Performance Management

Delivering Solutions

The idea of "social performance" not only encompasses financial return on investment, but it also takes into account how the lives of the poor have changed and improved. Our Social Performance Management team works with organizations around the world to implement the free Progress out of Poverty Index™.

This tool measures clients’ poverty levels and tracks changes in their poverty levels over time.  On our blog, the SPM team documented their recent travels to Senegal and Mali to train MFIs on the PPI. The team has also launched a video series, "PPI in 30 Seconds," featuring MFI staff discussing the importance of PPI in tracking the poor’s movement out of poverty.

LAST CHANCE! Vote for Us to Win $200,000 through Members Project®

Vote NowIn traditional microfinance, a group leader asks four friends she trusts to form a borrower’s circle—each member gets a life-changing microloan and co-guarantees the loans for each other. The group leader ensures that payments are made weekly.  With average repayment rates between 95 and 98 percent, this strategy is tried and true!

Now, we're asking you to be our Group Leader and help us win $200,000 by recruiting four friends/family members to vote. We’re in serious jeopardy of losing the Members Project® contest.  Earlier this week our biggest competitor increased its number of votes by five percent!  Your support has helped bring opportunities to millions of poor people—$200,000 could help us reach so many more. Supporters like you control whether we win or lose. Will you lead us to victory by voting now and sharing this with four friends?

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Says Technology Can Create Opportunity for the Poor

Mobile PhoneIn her remarks at a recent USAID conference, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton championed innovation and technology as “the great equalizers,” advocating mobile technology as “fundamental” to the fight against global poverty. Grameen Foundation is proud to be at the forefront of that fight.

Our Application Laboratory (AppLab), mobile banking, and other technologies are breaking barriers for the world’s poorest by increasing their access to business opportunities, financial services, and expert information on topics ranging from agriculture to healthcare.

Secretary Clinton even cited an instance of Kenyan farmers whose incomes have grown by 30 percent since using mobile technology!  But, she cautions, we can’t stop there. We need to “… replicate that progress and take it to scale in the lives of the billion people at the bottom of the world’s economic ladder.” With your support, we can continue to expand and replicate our programs, reach more of the bottom billion poorest people, and help stop poverty in its tracks.

Read Clinton’s remarks or watch her video.

PPI™ Helps Grameen-Jameel/Partners Better Track Client Poverty Levels

Grameen JameelAfter successfully completing a PPI™ scorecard for Egypt in April 2010, Grameen Foundation trained Grameen-Jameel staff and partners in May on the Progress Out of Poverty Index™ to enable  them  to deploy the tool to measure and track the poverty levels of their clients. Grameen-Jameel, a joint venture between Grameen Foundation and ALJ Foundation, alleviates poverty in the Arab World through strategic partnerships with microfinance institutions by providing financial and non-financial support.  In this region, nearly 75 million people live on less than $2.50 a day.

Grameen Foundation Donor Witnesses Dollars at Work during Philippines Visit

Donor TripIn June, David Tsui joined Grameen Foundation President Alex Counts and members of Grameen Foundation staff on a visit to Activists for Social Alternatives (ASA) Foundation Inc. and Center for Agricultural and Rural Development (CARD), two MFIs in the Philippines.

“During these visits, we sat in on centre meetings and talked with clients about how microfinance has changed their lives.” David said. While in a center meeting at ASA Foundation, David met the woman who held the largest loan at the MFI. She had purchased a farm with her loan and sold fruit in Manila. David suggested she buy a truck to transport goods between there and her community, “however, she was way ahead of me,” he said. The enterprising woman had already planned to buy a truck with her next loan!
