寄件人: Matthew Hann <mhann@riders.org> 主題: Riders News - Watch an interview with our Nigeria programme director, and can you donate two minutes? - August 2010 收件人: "Riders News" <incubator.hou@gmail.com> 日期: 2010年8月2日,星期一,下午10:04 ‘If she had got to a medical centre, then it wouldn’t have happened.’ All of Riders teams in Africa are made up of local people. Many of our staff spend time in different programmes so they can learn from each other and transfer skills. During July our three new programme directors travelled to the Gambia to visit to our most established programme. The visit gave the programme directors from Zimbabwe, Kenya and Nigeria the chance to see how our team in the Gambia are helping to ensure all health workers in the country have the potential to reach every community. On their way to the Gambia the programme directors made a brief stop in our office in the UK and they were able to take 10 minutes from their busy schedule to speak to our YouTube channel, RidersforHealthTV. The first of these interviews is online now and shows Riders’ new programme director in Nigeria, Effiom Nyong Effiom, explaining why he wanted to work for Riders. ‘For me it was like a missing link,’ he said. ‘The biggest challenge Africa faces is getting the development, no matter how good intentioned, to the people.’ Like many people who have spent any time in rural areas in Africa, Effiom had his own experiences of seeing people who had suffered because the health care they needed couldn’t reach them. ‘I saw a lady once in Cross River state, and she was walking with a limp,’ Effiom recalled. ‘I realised that she had given birth at home. Her hips were too small and the force of pushing had shifted her hips. There was the realisation that if she had better treatment and could have had been gotten to a medical centre, then it wouldn’t have happened.’ Riders’ operations director, Ngwarati Mashonga, accompanied the programme directors to the Gambia, and recently returned to the UK. ‘This was an invaluable trip for all the programme directors and hopefully they will have learnt a lot that they can take back to their own programmes. I am sure that it will help them to support even more health workers and reach many more people with reliable health care.’ You can find out more about our country programmes by clicking here, or you can visit our YouTube channel RidersforHealthTV by clicking here. If you buy one of the fantastic second-hand jackets from Riders’ eBay store you will be helping health workers in Africa reach more people with regular health care, as well as picking up a bargain. In July customers and staff from Dainese Manchester generously donated their unwanted motorcycling clothing to Riders for Health, and we have now started to put this on eBay as part of our Recycle for Life programme. ‘We couldn’t believe it when six big boxes of jackets and trousers arrived in the office’ reported Astrid Jenkinson from Riders’ fundraising team. ‘Riders are so lucky to receive all this amazing support from the motorcycling community around the world. It’s thanks to people like the team at Dainese Manchester that Riders are able to reach over ten million men, women and children across rural Africa with basic health care.’ Riders for Health knows how important it is that whether you are delivering health care in Africa, or riding to work in the UK, it is vital that you have the right protective clothing. And with everyone keeping a closer eye on the pounds these days we think this is a great chance for people to pick up good quality kit without breaking the bank. All funds raised through donations like the one from Dainese Manchester will make a big difference to the lives of people living in Africa. After all, buying something for just £30 could help make sure that a health worker in Africa has the clothing that they need to keep them safe. If you have any good quality unwanted motorcycle clothing that would like to donate to Recycle for Life then you can send it to: Riders for Health, The Drummonds, Spring Hill, Pitsford, Northampton, NN6 9AA. We are looking for all types of motorcycle gear, but it does need to be in good condition. Please note that for safety reasons we are NOT able to accept helmets. Get your running shoes on for the Brighton Marathon In April Riders for Health had five runners who took part in the first ever Brighton Marathon to raise money for our work. Entries are now open for the 2011 marathon, and Riders for Health have secured 10 spaces next race. If you fancy a challenge, why not sign up today? Health care in Africa gains strength from US MotoGP paddock Riders for Health supporters in the USA had the chance for an exclusive MotoGP experience on Thursday, July 22, before the Red Bull MotoGP at Laguna Seca, as they raised money for our work in Africa. Fifty-three participants took part in the exclusive event as they had an inside look at the world's premier motorcycle racing championship with a pit lane tour hosted by American grand prix legend, and Riders for Health co-founder, Randy Mamola. As well as this behind-the-scenes look into MotoGP, the participants took part in a 100 mile motorcycle ride through the spectacular 'Steinbeck' country around the Laguna Seca circuit. On their return, they completed three laps of the famous track, including the legendry Corkscrew turn. The day ended with an amazing MotoGP auction, which raised a fantastic $30,590. Bidders were able to bid on a Tissot watch signed by Nicky Hayden, which raised $4,000. Casey Stoner, Ben Spies and Randy de Puniet each donated a pair of boots which raised a further $1,700. The Suzuki MotoGP team raised an incredible sum of $16,500 when they auctioned a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend the US MotoGP weekend as a team member. The package included paddock passes for the whole weekend, plus the chance to watch some of Saturday's sessions from pit-wall and the team's pit-box. And what's more, the winning bidder is set to join the team on the grid for the start of the race on Sunday. Riders for Health CEO and co-founder, Andrea Coleman said: 'The money we have raised at Day of Stars will have a huge impact on Riders for Health's work in Africa. It will allow us to mobilize more health workers and reach even more men, women and children with lifesaving health care. We would like to thank all the teams and riders who took part, as well as everyone at MotoGP and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for making this event possible. But most of all we would like to thank everyone who came along and helped us to raise so much money.' | | Help us spread the word about the need for reliable transportation in Africa… If you have found this newsletter interesting, please forward it to a friend.
