Not Far From the TreeLaura Reinsborough founded Not Far From the Tree (NFFT) in 2008 to ensure that fruit does not go to waste in the city of Toronto. Today, this award-winning project boasts a crew of more than 950 volunteers that picked more than six thousand pounds of fruit last year.

SEE Change spoke with Laura about what inspired this venture, how the organization is addressing food security, and where things are headed in 2012.

I recently attended the Social Finance Forum, organized by the newly minted MaRS Centre for Impact Investing. A worthy event, to be sure, it provided me with much to ponder while offering a fascinating snapshot of this at-times-dynamic-at-other-times-stagnant social finance space.

Three years ago, I began working on solving a problem that is as complex as they come: saving the fish. If you're not familiar with the problem of global overfishing, the stats are stark.

Eighty-five percent of the world's fisheries are either fished at their limits or overexploited. At this rate, by 2050, we risk global collapse of the entire commercial fishing industry. That's bad news for the 200 million people who earn their livelihood from fisheries, even worse news for the more than one billion people on the planet who depend on fish as their primary protein.
