One Young World announces the One Young World Social Business Fund
  • On September 3rd, Prof. Muhammad Yunus and The Grameen Creative Lab attended the One Young World Summit in Zurich, the premier global forum for young people of leadership caliber bringing together 1,200 youth ambassadors from over 170 countries.
  • Hans Reitz opened the day with an interactive session on social business which quickly evolved into a vibrant debate with almost 20 delegates actively discussing social business live on stage
  • Prof. Muhammad Yunus closed the day with an inspiring speech that emphasized the unique power that today’s young generation disposes of: “You are the luckiest generation in the entire human history. You don’t believe it, but you are!” Standing ovations and an enormously positive response applauded Prof. Yunus into the night.
  • Deeply touched by the day, the founders of One Young World spontaneously decided to adopt Hans Reitz’ idea of implementing a One Young World Social Business Fund that will help the delegates of next year’s summit to implement the best social business ideas
  • Find out more about the summit and watch a highlight reel at http://www.oneyoungworld.com

GCL co-founder Hans Reitz visits ESMT
  • Hans Reitz gave a presentation on the promise of social business to students of the European School of Management and Technology in Berlin in late August.
  • The ESMT students had been working on a case study about Grameen Shakti and had the opportunity to discuss their thoughts and results with Hans Reitz who gave his feedback at the end of the session.

The German Social Business Forum expands the community of partners
  • As announced in July’s newsletter, the German Social Business Forum 2011 will connect an audience of representatives from politics, academia, business and civil society to develop action plans to rally political support for social business in Germany.

Colombia: Bienestar wins contest and new pilot projects take shape
  • Bienestar wins a social business contest: Our Pilot Bienestar has just made it to the top of the podium of the Artemisia Social Business Contest. It was selected for the completeness of its business plan and the potential for impact. This social business aims at improving health care access for low-income people in Caldas. Congratulations to the entrepreneurial team!
  • Pilot projects: Grameen Caldas is currently looking for investors to support the implementation of its three pilot projects: Bienestar, Fortified Panela and Como En Casa. Our newest project, Como en Casa, uses a web platform to invite tourist into the homes of low-income people in rural Caldas. Part of the revenues will be reinvested into a home improvement program.
  • Creating Grameen Caldas: Great work has been accomplished by the GCL team in Caldas in order to completely define the structure and functioning of Grameen Caldas.

 India: Exciting new university collaborations
  • YY Mumbai is in talks to be official social  business partner for IIT-Bombay´s well known business plan competition, appearing as a social business avatar (Eureka Social) for the first time this year.
  • We are also in talks with IIT Kharagpur to collaborate on pan India awareness drive on how youth led social business can help India to achieve its Millennium Development Goals.

YY Mumbai: IED Students research sanitation problems in Indian schools
  • Four students and their coordinator from the IED Design for Social Business (D4SB) joint masters program made the journey to India to understand the context of sanitation problems in India, particularly in schools. The main purpose of their research initiative was to understand how the availability of sanitation facilities affects students’ absenteeism, dropout rates and overall health.
  • They visited schools in both rural and urban India and slums to better assess the problems first hand
  • They then visited NGOs and social businesses to better understand how some of these problems are being solved

Design for Social Business @ the Bombay Hub
  • YY Mumbai, together with its partner Unlimited India organized a networking session for the IED students to cap off their 2 week India field trip. We had a great line up of expert speakers on education and sanitation including
    • Akhil Shahani, MD of Kaizen PE – Need for investment in education
    • Aditi Thorat, COO of Edelgive Foundation – Need for philanthropy in education
    • Pooja Warier, Director, Unlimited India – Starting an organization
    • Krishna Ramkumar, Founder, Avanti Fellows – Shortcomings of the education system
  • We had over 30 participants from very diverse backgrounds, who were eager to collaboratively discuss radical new ideas.
  • The speakers inspired everyone with their unique experiences that challenged common perceptions and brought much needed insights
  • With so much food for thought after the speeches, the Bombay Hub was filled with lively discussions around social business and the joy of building new relationships.

Haiti: GCL team looks forward to visit from Prof. Yunus
  • Prof. Yunus confirmed his first visit to Haiti from 13th till 15th October. Preparations are ongoing and save the date invitations have been sent out. Especially for this event, representatives of SAP AG, the Co-founder of the YY Haiti Initiative, will travel to Haiti and attend the event.
  • The YY Haiti team made its first investment: The entrepreneurial training center ETRE ayisyen founded by Mathias Pierre, a well-known Haitian entrepreneur, is the first Social Business supported by GCL Haiti. The investment derives from a generous donation from Accenture GmbH.
  • 22 Haitian students submitted their essays for the GCL Haiti Essay Competition. The jury, consisting of two representatives of SAP AG and one representative of the Haitian Fund for Innovation, is currently reviewing the documents. The two winners of the competition will be awarded with a trip to Vienna, Austria, where the Global Social Business Summit will take place on November 11-12th of 2011.
  • The YY Haiti Team continues to be supported by the secondment program between Accenture GmbH and GCL. The next Accenture secondee has started as YY Haiti Project Lead beginning of September and is taking over his tasks with full dedication.
