A BIBLICAL VISION FOR SOCIETY JUBILEE CENTRE E-NEWS May/June 2012 In this E-News: Dear friend It has been a busy few weeks at Jubilee Centre, with two books published in the last month alone. From Generation 2 Generation was launched at a conference hosted by Pramacare, the Christian care provider who funded the project, and After Capitalism was launched at the Hope for Europe conference in Copenhagen. As well as a number of other speaking events coming up over the summer, we are organising our own Autumn conference on Christian responses to the continuing effects of the financial crisis. Warm wishes from the Jubilee Centre team, Jonathan, Alan and Guy | | | One of the Jubilee Centre's recent publications, From Generation 2 Generation, was launched on 17 May at a conference celebrating Pramacare's 30th anniversary. Based in Dorset, Pramacare are a Christian care provider who generously funded work on the fully revised and updated version of Julia Burton-Jones' 1990 book. Director Jonathan Tame and researcher Guy Brandon were invited to the event, which was held in Corfe Mullen. Guy gave the opening address for the conference, introducing the book and the insights that a biblical worldview can bring to questions of care - especially in an era of austerity and shortfalls in care provision. Read more... | | | With Greece looking ahead to fresh elections and world leaders contemplating the possible breakup of the Eurozone, there seems to be no end in sight to the financial crisis. The Jubilee Centre's recent and timely book, After Capitalism, is a collection of Cambridge Papers that seeks to rethink the foundations of a market economy. It argues that the Bible's central theme of relationships is the key to rebuilding a system that promotes economic well-being, financial stability and social cohesion. The continuing economic turmoil affects all of us and calls not just for analysis but for solutions. Paul Mills and Mike Schluter will unpack the causes of the financial crisis and propose an alternative model based on biblical principles. Guest speakers will also introduce practical ideas on responding personally, including an innovative new financial product that will help homebuyers and root their transaction in relational rather than solely financial principles. God, Justice and Society is written by Dr Jonathan Burnside who is Reader in Biblical Law at Bristol University. He’s also a Jubilee Centre trustee and author of ground-breaking work for Jubilee Centre such as Consent versus Community and Status and Welfare of Immigrants. The Coalition for Marriage's campaign to support the traditional definition of marriage continues to attract widespread attention in the media and among the public, with over 500,000 signatures to its petition. Meanwhile, the government's consultation on equal marriage closes on 14 June. If you would like to respond to this, you can do so via the C4M website, or via the Home Office's pages.
