Join us for the GSVC Global Finals and Awards Dinner
on April 7 & 8!

Dear Houghton

Our recent report examining the Big Society received some good media coverage this month, including an interview on BBC London and a piece our director was able to write for the Guardian’s Comment is Free. For more details, see Faith in the Big Society?  Also, you can now book securely on our website for our Big Society & The Church Conference in Cambridge on 4th June!

New Cambridge Paper: The Great Financial Crisis
The self-destructive tendency of a debt-based financial system is being retaught with a vengeance by the current financial crisis. To diagnose our current plight, our latest Cambridge Paper by international economist Paul Mills expounds the biblical teaching on debt, interest, and finance; explains what is really going on from a relational perspective; and draws applications for the Christian, the church, and society.  As usual, you can also find a summary of the paper and other readers’ comments on our website.

What Big Society Really Means: One Top Condition For Success and Five Practical Examples
The Big Society is not just about volunteering. It also includes starting social enterprises and bringing new ethical principles and social transformation agendas to business. It will involve government doing more of the things for which it should be responsible, and the rest of us being enabled to do the things for which government has wrongly assumed responsibility in the past…  9 March 2011

Changes to GiftAid

As a registered charity, we are able to claim back tax through the GiftAid scheme on all donations given to us by UK taxpayers.  In recent years, we have been able to claim an extra 28p for every £1 donated but from 6th April this amount will decrease to 25p per £1.  Three pence may not sound a lot, but last year almost £20,000 of our income came from reclaimed GiftAid.  So, this 3p reduction in GiftAid could hit our income by £2,000 per year.  If you are thinking of making a donation in the near future, in order to maximise the value of your gift to Jubilee Centre, can we therefore encourage you to do so before 5th April?  If you would like to, you can donate securely online via the Support pages of our website.

Prayer Corner
‘“Those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”’ (Luke 13:4-5, NIV)

(Taking Impact Investing to Scale Means) Figuring Out How to Work with Government
By: Kevin Jones

"My frustration with the social investment scene in Europe is that there is quite a lot of talk, ... and we have a reasonable level of entities doing lower risk efforts. What there is not is high risk, pipeline development or early stage investment." That statement was not made by someone sitting on the sidelines tossing in a criticism. It's the analysis of Geoff Mulgan, formerly of the thought leading Young Foundation, one of the creators of social impact bonds, now taking on an even bigger task leading NESTA and working at the highest levels with the European Union and entities like the European Investment Bank and other groups. A doer and a thinker, Mulgan has an idea of where he wants things to move. >>>Read More

The Public Interest in Social Capital Markets
By: Ben Thornley

The growth of social capital markets, in size and influence, invariably raises the question: what role for government?

If private enterprise can deliver measurable social and environmental benefits, government may have an interest in providing support through favorable regulation, tax breaks, co-investment, capacity building, R&D, and other policies.

Impact Investing: A Framework for Policy and Design - published in January by InSight at Pacific Community Ventures and the Initiative for Responsible Investment at Harvard University, supported by The Rockefeller Foundation - highlights some rules of thumb for using policy to catalyze private capital for public good.
